I have O&O Defrag which has a defragger as a screensaver. I can run the
defragger on my computer (Athlon 64 X2, Asus Crosshair main board, 4Gb RAM, WD Raptor X for OS and programs, WD Caviar for data, Windows Vista Ultimate 64-bit) in the usual way as with any other program. The screensaver is in C:\Windows\System32 as ooscrsav.scr and it shows up in Windows Explorer and in the selection for screensavers in the desktop Properties dailog. However, when I set the O&O Defrag screensaver to run when the computer is idle, an error message shows up on the display ("Initializing connection. . .. An attempt was made to access a socket in a way forbidden by its access permissions. (0)"). Moving the mouse to cancel the screen saver shows the OneCare firewall blocker dialog, I reply to allow the connection, the UAC pops up (I'm gettin' to hate that thing!), again I say this is OK, then the OneCare firewall blocker pops up for the second time to which I reply allow the connection again. If you allow something through the firewall, shouldn't OneCare remember that and not ask *every* time the program tries to run? It remembers other programs. Even more mysterious, I have tried to change the firewall settings to force the firewall to allow ooscrsav.scr. When you click on "Add" you are presented with a dialog box for you to select the program via a Windows Explorer-like interface. Well, I drill down to C:\Windows\System32 and *there is NO ooscrsav.scr file to be found*!!! Yet it shows up in Explorer!!!! What the hey is going on here? Does this mean OneCare recognizes only Microsoft products? There is a firewall listing for OO Defrag Container (x64). Don't know what that does although I do have the 64-bit version of the defragger. I have notified the vendor of the above, but have not heard from them yet (of course, I usually do these stupid things on Friday evening or on the weekend when no one is at work so I have to wait until the next working day before I get a response!). Maybe this is just something to add to the list of OneCare bugs. . . Regards, Turner |

The first thing you noted, the double allow prompt, is a bug that the firewall team was unable to resolve in time for the 2.0 release. The fact that the .scr file can't be found could be due to the fact that the OneCare allow dialog, when browsing, is looking for specific file types and the ..scr is not one of them but that's a guess on my part. Does the allow/block dialog specifically list the .scr file and path? If you have contact O&O, you might want to refer them to this URL - http://onecare.live.com/standard/en-...ort/isvfaq.htm -steve -- Stephen Boots sboots@xxxxxx Microsoft MVP - Windows Live Windows Live OneCare Forum Moderator http://forums.microsoft.com/windowso....aspx?siteid=2 |

Steve,
Yes, the allow/block dialog does show the file name, but not the path. In the Add dialog, I was able to specify C:\Windows\System32\*.* and it showed the Windows-provided screen savers but not the O&O screen saver. I haven't heard from O&O yet. Stay tuned. I'll let you know what they say. Turner "StephenB" <sboots@xxxxxx> wrote in message news:f5ndq31felu9fi6ier29kpes92t0vvr8jd@xxxxxx

"Dear Mr Morgan, thank you for your request. I'm sorry but I can not tell you why "Windows Live OneCare" does not show the O&O Screensavers file. Is there an other firewall installed on your system which may block the start of the screensaver? Since we use TCP/IP as an internal communication protocol, a particular port must be free for this. Please read the following information: When O&O Defrag starts up, I receive an error message (10061)/my firewall reports an access attempt. Why? What can I do about this? The communication between the components of O&O Defrag (e.g. the Agent and the GUI) is based on TCP/IP. This communication takes place only internally, and doesn't access the internet. However, most firewalls are programmed to recognize internal IP communication, so you receive a warning message. You don't have to turn off your firewall! Simply open up port 50300. Since O&O Defrag automatically checks access privileges, there can be no external access over this port even if you are connected to the internet. Best regards / Mit freundlichen Gruessen -- Matthias Guenther O&O Software GmbH - Creating Solutions!" I have done as requested and opened port 50300 but have not let the computer alone long enough to see if this works. I think I should do a restart, anyway. Turner |
