That could be a symptom that you are running something in normal mode
which is interfering. You could try using Task Manager, Process Explorer
or even tasklist (in a cmd window) to capture a list of active processes
each time and figure out which ones aren't being run in safe mode.
Then try preventing them from running in normal mode and see if that
changes your symptom.

That would be testing the hypothesis that you had an installation problem. ; )

Perhaps that is what wouldn't be running in safe mode? <EG>

Try asking Live One Care NG if there are any diagnostics in it
which would help clarify how far IE's requests are getting?

To rule out Windows Live OneCare as the culprit, open OneCare, click Change
Settings and disable the firewall temporarily. If IE8 can access the Internet,
check if IE8 has been blocked by the OneCare firewall on the advanced firewall
settings. If it has been blocked, unblock it. If it does not appear on the
block/allow list, add it to the allow list by browsing to the exe file for IE8.

My question was, when OC firewall is active, does it have
a diagnostic which proves that it is passing a request on
to the network?

Robert,

I hope your experience with IE8 gets better. I've heard others saying that we should wait until IE8 evolves before installing.

With Live OneCare, under advanced firewall settings, you should be able to see a list of programs that are allowed access through the firewall as well as programs you have blocked.

Let us know is this helps you at all.

Re: Vista Can't connect with IE 8 - says not responding

Ah, cross-posting. :-) Such fun...
No, there is no such diagnostic for OneCare. There is detailed firewall logging
available - change settings, logging tab, place a check mark next to the
firewall logging option. After checking this and closing the OneCare settings,
try to connect. Reopen OneCare, go back to the logging tab and click "Create
support log." This opens a report in the browser that you can check to see if IE
was blocked.
For reference, I just installed IE8 on a VPC running XP Pro and OneCare 2.0. IE8
was allowed immediately, without prompting.
