can OneCare be run by Vista's Task Scheduler?

Just reading an article on page 91 of the March issue of PC World- the
author suggests running AV type software at night- and that if the PC is
not left on, it can be turned on by the Task Scheduler- which I just checked
out but I couldn't figure out, yet, how to do this. I like the idea- if the
computer can turn on, run the tune up, then turn off.

Suggestions welcome
Joe

Someone in te forums reported that this is what they do. The PC is set to sleep
after X minutes or hours of inactivity.
A task is configured in the Windows Scheduler to wake up the PC at 12:55 AM on
Sunday morning. The task can be anything, perhaps simply open another program,
if not OneCare.
OneCare would be scheduled to begin a Tuneup at 1:00 AM every Sunday.
Once Tune-up completes, the PC will then go back to sleep.
Note that Tune-up will not wake up the PC, but you can configure the scheduler
as above and since the PC is already awake, Tune-up will begin on schedule.

Re: can OneCare be run by Vista's Task Scheduler?

hmmm.... interesting- I see in Scheduler an item "SideShow" which contains a
function "AutoWake" which should do the trick. The description of the
function says, "This task automatically wakes the computer and then puts it
to sleep when automatic wake is turned on for a Windows SideShow-compatible
device." Now, if only OneCare was a SideShow compatible device, then I
presume the system would shut down as soon as the Tune Up was completed -
otherwise, the system will shut down based on the Power function- which
might leave the system running. In this day and age of energy crisis- I hope
that MS will in future versions make OneCare SideShow compatible- perhaps
you could pass this on to the development team, Stephen.

If this all makes sense and they do make OneCare SideShow compatible, then I
recommend that they make a note of it in the help files so others will
realize this option.

Re: can OneCare be run by Vista's Task Scheduler?

No need to do Sideshow, which is a hardware solution (external display). Just
set a task to launch Notepad.exe and it will wake up to do that. Set another
task to close Notepad.exe. :-)
As long as it wakes up before the Tune-up is scheduled, it will work.
