How do I configure Update so as I can view what is being updated, what progress is being made, how long will it be to finish, etc.?

I must be the only OneCare user who has dialup modem. OneCare just sits there reporting "Checking for Updates" sometime for hours. Frustrating One never knows when to disconnect or just leave it to monopolize the telephone line.

Unfortunately, there is no way to see the progress of a download in OneCare.
OneCare updates are downloaded in the background while you are connected, so the
only time you should have an issue is if you only ever connect for a few minutes
at a time and never remain connected long enough in a 10 day period to receive
the full updated signatures. If that happens, you'll get a warning and you
should then remain connected overnight until it updates.

Steve,

Im not sure you answered all of Rockfarmers questions.

Assuming OneCare has the signatures, how can the user then monitor
whats happening, double or reverse clicking the yellow shield doesn't
seem get much in the way of a response.

Actually, I think I did answer - there is no way to see what OneCare is doing
when it is checking for updates to itself.
What yellow shield are you referring to? If the OneCare tray icon is yellow,
double clicking it should open OneCare. It will then tell you in the main
interface what needs to be done to get back to green.

H.mm, I'm pretty sure mine doesn't. If its red a click will bring up
the main interface. But I'm pretty sure that if its yellow, hovering
tells me the download percent done, but clicking does nothing. If I
remember and I see it I'll click it and let you know.

I think you are confusing the OneCare icon and the Windows Automatic Updates
notification. The OneCare icon loks like a squashed circle and is green, yellow,
or red. It will never give you a percent download. The AU icon in a sheild (in
XP) and when it is downloading, it will tell you the percent complete. There is
a red shield icon that will appear if there is a problem with the Windows
Security Center, but it doesn't have anything to do with AU. It will warn you if
there is a problem with security center monitored items.

In some respects I was happier when I had several products, each doing
its own job, I'd hoped that by getting a bundled product from the same
firm that makes the OS would make all this security stuff easier, but
I think I'm more confused and certainly no wiser than I was before.

Re: Download information

I hate to say it, but in this new age of Internet, dialup is obsolete.
its just too slow for all the media rich web sites and update files
are so big it would take days with dialup to download some of them.
