Onecare looks for updates (and loops) with Automatic Updates ON

Windows XP Home SP2, with 512M RAM and 26G of used hard drive space, using
IE6.

When I open OneCare after Windows starts up, it tells me that it's missing
updates and to go to the website. When I take that option, the website goes
into what appears to be an endless loop looking for updates. I give it an
inordinately long time to complete, but finally X out, even though it still
shows disk activity; then when I return to the OneCare status screen, the
"missing updates" message is gone.

Shouldn't this be totally unnecessary, in view of the fact that I have
Automatic Updates turned on?

Re: Onecare looks for updates (and loops) with Automatic Updates ON

Since OneCare requires that all critical and important updates are installed,
having IE6 and not IE7 would mean you won't be in green/good status.

Re: Onecare looks for updates (and loops) with Automatic Updates ON

This "problem" is on my daughter's PC. Her first taste of IE7 was
unpleasant and she elected to stay with IE6 (for a while). I'm using IE7 on
my PC and I'm having no similar problem with OneCare.

I've gone through the various help options without finding an answer. What
do you think of the following?

OneCare is already showing a message that IE7 is not installed. My guess is
that the check for "missing updates" is all-inclusive, and is getting
triggered by the missing IE7, even though no *other* updates are missing.
This is redundant and misleading. When I go to the website (per the error
message) the system goes on a (uncontrolled?) wild goose chase, looking for
nonexistent ."missing updates". If I'm right, I suggest that the check for
missing updates should ignore the missing IE7.
