Re: ReBoot Time

no, his avatar is gaara from the anime naruto. his badass and insanity quotient are off the charts. so johngalt, can I have a fully functioning computer if I did what the guy did with a 60 second boot time? Or will I have to enable programs when I log in?

Re: ReBoot Time

Ahh, Naruto - I knew it was familiar :P I thought it might have been Eureka, especially as she looked in the middle episodes after having gotten sick when she tried to merge herself with the Coralian in the Scab mines.

It depends - I have a lot of programs that auto start but I want them to, and my AV takes out a chunk of time booting - I am not worried about how long my computer takes to reboot so much because, personally, I rarely turn off my computer - boot times are not as important to me as app response.

Also, which guy with the 60 second boot time? there were more than a couple, IIRC - and you'd have to ask them *exactly* what they did to get an idea - did they tweak services? Did they use Safe mode? Did they just disabled every friggin startup app and measure?

Hello ronakp10, welcome to Vista forums!

@John, I think he's talking about me.
BTW, after I added a couple programs at startup it takes a while longer.
Like John said; it's how I want it now.

You definitely DON'T want to shut down any "Service" if you don't know what it does, or how it relates to, or depends on, other services.
Shut down "Telephony" for instance and you'll kill your internet connection.
I learned my lesson about that, early in my experience with Windows XP.
Shutting down un-needed services by guesswork is very dangerous at best and catastrophic at the worse. I had to reload XP six times before I caught on to the proper way to shut down services.
I finally learned how to rely on 'System Restore' to recover from little 'Ooops!', like shutting down a needed service.

So when I finally decided to do it with Vista, I went right to the 'source' for the best information. I went to "Black Viper's" web site and studied his recommendations for shutting down services, then I opted to only do what's listed in the "SAFE" column.
Windows Vista SP1 Service Configurations by Black Viper

I found 22 services that I could either disable or put into "Manual" mode.
In any case, none of those 22 services will load during the boot-up process.

I've run my batch file to shut down those 22 services on my own two PC's that run Vista and I've seen no loss of functionality.

When you start messing around with the registry, or shutting down services, it's always a good idea to make a new Restore Point before you start.
I force a new restore point every time I boot up, with a script in my "Startup" folder, so if I screw something up I've always got a fresh restore point (not more than just a few hours old) to go back to.
I have to do a Restore at least once a week, with all the programs that I test, etc.

I always hope that hearing about my own adventures and misadventures will benefit someone else who wants to go where I've been. It's been a rocky road!

Y'all have a great day now, Y'hear?

Re: ReBoot Time

Hi,

Yes, I posted a reboot time of 53 seconds - that is largely because I have only got the essentials coming in at startup - firewall, antivirus, antispyware and video card. I prefer to click on each app. as I need it - they start immediately. Other people prefer to have a load of stuff already started - it's up to you.

Re: ReBoot Time

Hi everyone I have Vista Ultimate 64bit and my computer was quick when i first installed it but over time became slow, especially when it came to start up and shut down. But with help from Visa Forums that has all changed and now its better than ever e.g. it used to take about 5 minutes for a restart but now it only takes 96 seconds, now that's an improvement

I am running a 2.13ghz dual core @ 2.81ghz O/C, 1600FSB, 4gigs of low latency ram at 5,4,4,12 800mhz and a Galaxy Geforce 9600GT 512mb O/C and all this on a ASUS P5K-SE Mother board

I have left all windows services at default aside from the ones mentioned in this forum
and do not have to start anything manually once started

Vista Rules!!

Re: ReBoot Time

This is my first time posting and I'm not really that knowledgeable when it comes to computers. My current startup time was 256 seconds and I have cut it down to about 150. I noticed in a previous post that that startup programs affected the startup time. I was wondering if you guys could please help me in sorting out which startup programs I needed and which ones just took up space.

My programs: (Here are the links for I am unable to show them as pics on this forum).
