Lowering fan speeds

I put in a new 120mm fan at the front of my case yesterday to increase air flow, and it does seem to be making a difference, just it's quite noisy. I've used speedfan to lower it to 60%, which makes it barely audible, but still good cooling.

The only problem now is that speedfan doesn't keep these settings after a restart, so is there a way/a program that can do this, so I don't need to do it through speedfan each time my PC starts up.

Re: Lowering fan speeds

Does your BIOS allow you to control fan speeds?

Re: Lowering fan speeds

I had a quick look before using speedfan. I'll have another look though incase I missed something.

Edit: Looked again and I just have the ASUS Q-Fan settings. There's not much options. Either "Performance", which doesn't make much difference, "Optimal", which runs it full speed and "Silent", which just turns the fan off altogether :S

Re: Lowering fan speeds

Hi Everlong18,

Have you considered using a speed limiter in series with your fan? Have a look in your local PC shop to see if they have anything suitable. I am not familiar with Morecambe, but you should know where suitable shops are located. Here are a couple of limiters which are available from Maplin, but seeing as there is no store in Morecambe you will either have to travel to get one or order one by post. They should, however, give you an idea of what you are looking for.

Thanks, I'll have a look at the speed reduction cable. I have a Zalaman Fan Mate 2 controller for my CPU fan, and it works okay, just you have to run the cable through the back of the PC, and it can add to clutter in the case.

Re: Lowering fan speeds

That Silent mode probably turns the fan off because it is not hot enough in the case for it to run - but if it *gets* hot it will power it up and run it - it's just the the case right now is not at a temp where it needs to run so it is not going to run.

I think Steve's suggestion is going to be the best for you, unless you want to invest in a front panel to control the fans....

Re: Lowering fan speeds

you can always buy a different fan that has it's own controller. I have this. It's one of the BEST fans you can buy. moves 110 CFM of air and it's decently loud. but I have mine set to about 65% and I can't hear it over my GFX card or other fans. it's the best around. you could get something like this.

Newegg.com - SILVERSTONE FM121 120mm Case Fan - Case Fans

either way speedfan should have a setting that says Load on startup. and if you save the settings in Speedfan, it should start with the computer and set the fan to that speed. not the setting, but the program. if I remember correct.
