Re: Advice on mobo upgrade?

Thanks Norm, I think you're right. I've just been using defraggler and playing music and the temps are high seventies and even 80c.
I've dropped the OC but think I'll order another cooler as soon as I can get some advice.
I've never fitted one before and all that thermal paste business sounds complicated. Also won't my current cooler be hard to remove?
If I order one tonight I might have it by Tuesday.
I'll wait for some more advice.
Thanks Norm, best wishes, John

Re: Advice on mobo upgrade?

Hi John, There are different types, some that you need to remove the Mobo to fit, others use the existing CPU mounting clips. They all have their strengths and weaknesses. Applying thermal paste is no biggie. The trick is to get a nice even spread without using too much. (More is not really better in this case) I researched the various types on the net and found a good site that looks at a whole bunch of them.
CPU coolers compared!

If you search for reviews on the Cooler you like some sites give you tips on fitting them.

Heres one for the Tuniq

As to the accuracy of their claims, that's where you need the experts.

Re: Advice on mobo upgrade?

I've been looking at cooler reviews all night until I'm going cross eyed.
The Tuniq Tower looks good apart from hassle fitting it. Also there is the Tuniq Core Contact (also sold as Sunbeam). This seems just as effective but plugs in with push pins.
It's a tough choice.
Thanks for listening, John

Re: Advice on mobo upgrade?

Hmmn. Just been looking at some reviews of my current cooler, the Thermaltake Golden Orb 2.
Apparently that fits onto the mobo using a back plate which is stuck onto the back of the mobo with adhesive.
I'm hoping that means that any of these big coolers with a back plate will screw into the same holes.
Does anybody know this?
Thanks, John

Re: Advice on mobo upgrade?

I would get used to the idea that the cooler you need is going to require a back mounting plate. Cooling an OC'd 65nm quad is no easy feat. If I were you I'd select a Thermalright or the Tuniq. You may as well get the best since you're not going to be getting any discount in price for lesser performance.

Re: Advice on mobo upgrade?

Yeah I'm coming round to that idea Fumz so thanks for your reply. Think I will go for the Tuniq tower. It just seems to have the edge over the core contact. I'll give the Thermalright range a closer look as well before I order. I was just hoping it might use the same backing plate as the Thermaltake I have now but I suppose it doesn't really matter.
Thanks a lot for your input, John

ps congratulations on your recent elections. They seem pretty historic from where I,m sat.

I freely admit my bias; I've been using Thermalright and nothing but Thermalright's for the last 5 or 6 years. Imho, there is nothing better. Of course, it does not hurt that every independent review backs me up, , but that's another thread.

To be honest though, the difference between a Thermalright and a Tuniq is negligible; not something you or I will see. If you prefer the Tunique, for whatever reason, then by all means, go for it. It's a badass piece of hardware and it won't let you down. If Thermalright didn't come out with the 6 pipe variant, I'd be a Tunique man today.

btw, thank you.

p.s. Thermaltake sucks. Don't compare excellent hardware, like Thermalright, Tuniqu or Zalman to Thermaltake....
