"A sneak peek given to the press by AMD, showcased their upcoming line of processors known as the "Phenom II".

The Phenom II are AMD's answer to Intel's newest chipset, the Core i7. Hoping to compete in the market with the Core i7 the Phenom II line of quad-core processors will be AM2+ compatible. The first two models to be released will have a clock speed that starts at 2.8GHz. However, one of the key bragging areas for AMD's line of Phenom processors is its overclockability.

AMD claims a 30-40% reduction in power consumption under full load thanks to their transition to a 45nm fab process. AMD has also stated that in addition to the 30-40% power consumption reduction that consumers can expect, they should also expect a 30-40% increase in performance over previous Phenom models.

In a demonstration, AMD displayed the overclocking power of the Phenom II X4, showing it hit 4GHz stable at 1.55v on air cooling with a temperature of 32?C. With water-cooling the CPU broke the 4GHz barrier with a 39?C temperature. For kicks and giggles the Phenom II was shown running stable at speeds higher than 5GHz on nitrogen cooling and even booted at speeds that were higher than 6GHz.

It's too early to say whether or not the Phenom II's can match the power of the i7's as we'll have to wait until benchmarks are released to do so, but the competition seems anything but idle. "

Even if it can compete with the i7, people have been going with Intel for better performance for so long now, they're just going to keep going to Intel naturally now.

If it can compete though, it will make Intel release the newer versions of the i7 quicker.

I certainly hope AMD is able to put out something that will give Intel some incentive to continue to push the envelope, but I'm not sure that "overclockability" is something to be bragging about considering they're only playing catch up? 1GHz overclocks on air have been common place with Intel's for quite some time now.

Well all them overclocking results have been achieved on Intel easily for a long time. The professional teams always push them to 5.8GHz to bench with, so nothing new.

ok well i will definitely be happy with the new phenom IIs. I have always been a hardcore AMD fan and you may be forgetting the true key focus they go after. Although Intel has created the new I7s and trying to make the fastest and most powerful anything, AMD has always been about the people. the AVERAGE joe who wants a decent bang for your buck pc. I have been using an outdated A64 X2 4000+. it only runs at 2.1 GHz but it still has plenty of power to run my x64 vista setup even with my lame video card. So I can proudly say i will be purchasing a new Phenom II for my new setup and am going to squeeze all that i can out of it. (without having to spend twice the amount of cash i wouldve for a new set of hardware for the I7 chipset)

ooooo and p.s. AM2+ compatible. extremely important. the mobo i want is only like 80 bucks so i think i will luck out

hm and another thing to that........ Intel is wayyyyy overpriced why pay $100 more for a processor that is goin to die on me in a couple of years? when i can get a AMD that will last

Not sure why anyone would want/need quads just yet, but I digress... pricing isn't a factor considering this little gem can kick the crap out of this $275.00 Phenom.

I wouldn't say it "kicks the crap" out of the Phenom II. The benchmarks I posted in the other thread shows the Phenom II keeping up with the Q9550.
