Re: overclocking my pc help....NOOb

The first problem is that you need to identify your components correctly first.

If your RAM has metal/aluminium on them, then you most likely have have RAM with heat spreaders.

I suspect that your VC is only 128mb.

Everest: (shareware limitations, but still usefull)
Lavalys - Comprehensive IT Security and Management

GPU-Z: Details about your Video Card
techPowerUp! :: Downloads

CPU-Z: Details about your CPU
CPUID

SIW (like Everest, but free)

Since it's a HP computer, your overclocking *may/most likely* will be pretty limited by what you can do in the BIOS.

Try the apps and get to know a bit more about your PC before trying to overclock it You also probably have a stock CPU cooler which is not good to use for overclocking.

I'm not trying to be discouraging, but what do you hope to achieve by overclocking?

Re: overclocking my pc help....NOOb

You won't be able to overclock anything on the motherboard you have cause HP locks the bios. You will only be able to overclock an aftermarket graphics card. Only certain brands from HP you can overclock.

Re: overclocking my pc help....NOOb

For the most part, Branded PC's do not make good Overclockers because they use cheap Motherboards to begin with... this is all hearsay though as I have never had a Dell or HP pc but it is what I read on other forums.

Re: overclocking my pc help....NOOb

AstaLaVista it isn't so much that they use cheap motherboards, it is more that they use motherboards that are the same as what you can buy. The boards may be missing a few features from the retail version, but the big one is they lock the bios from any changes like overclocking; and it isn't so much that the bios is locked, it is that those options just aren't visible. If you get a Dell or HP that has a motherboard in it that is identical to a retail board you could theoretically flash it with the retail board's bios and open those options up. Only problem with that is that then you will no longer have a Dell or HP computer, especially as far as Windows is concerned.

Re: overclocking my pc help....NOOb

they get the same boards most others use, and have. yet HP disables many of the features. Overclocking is Not very realistic or possible with a HP,Dell, Emachines.. all those.

You're best bet is to get a new Graphics card.. and overclock it. for some better gameplay. and other than that your good as the new 2GB of ram was your best upgrade. as Vista needs 2GB to run "well"

Also, after reading your info above, you only have onboard video.. not an actually grapics card. so you can't overclock that either.

Get a new GFX Card.. like a Nvidia 8800GT, or a 9800GTX. and you'll be happy!

Re: overclocking my pc help....NOOb

i dont play games. well kinda. but im kinda too old. i am a animation expert. working woth 3ds max studio 2009. it takes a heck lotta of cpu to run it. I need more cpu because it takes plain too long to render a 200 frame scene. i work by projeccts. i wan to overclock because i might get faster times.

but there is one mega question in my mind. should i just but a quad core and fit it in with my ecs mobo.? i always thought u needed a mobo that is strong enough to support ur cpu. u guy sound like that not true? so which is it??

Re: overclocking my pc help....NOOb

As long as the mobo has the socket and FSB to support the processor you want, it should fit.

Your DXDIAG doesn't actually say what processor you have, for whatever reason, but lets say it's a 2.2GHz Core 2 Duo, a 1066MHz FSB. You could get the Q6600 quad core CPU and it will work in your mobo.

Another thing also is, and I'm not sure how much it will help, but you could look at getting a new graphic card too and installing CUDA drivers for it, which helps offload CPU intensive things and lets the graphic card render it, and it has proved to be a lot more efficient as a graphic card has say 128 cores in the GPU as an example of a 9800GTX+.
