Intel's newest high-end processor, the Core i7 975 Extreme Edition is gearing up for launch later this year, on course of which, it already passed a milestone. Xtreme Systems Forums member PcCI2iminal scored one with overclocking a Core i7 975 XE D0 stepping chip part the 5 GHz mark, 5015 MHz to be precise using only air cooling for the processor, with an ambient temperature of 20 °C as claimed by the overclocker.

Highest OC I've seen a Phenom II on air is around 4GHz at the moment.

A nice OC though on the 975. Hope it's released soon, so then Intel can lower their prices on other CPUs and I can upgrade :p

yes he did that with a simple TRUE cooler.

there is another user in XS that has the D0 revision of the 920, and he was able to get to 5.3 Ghz with simple water cooling + some ice, with a Koolance CPU Block and a Koolance pump.. that is impressive as well.
