Vista - Can a PSU cause heat problems?

Before we blame the possible faultyness of the fan, could we say that the PSU could also be the reason for the low rpm's?

I wanna weed out everything before we take that hunk of metal out and get a new one and have the same problem.

The old heatsink with it's fan ran at 2200 rpm's but it plugged into a 4 prong looking little slot in the mobo, this new one plugs into a 3 pronger sticking out of the mobo.

mine has three also. with a 500 psu you should be ok i would say a faulty fan.

also mine came with a wired remote that i could turn the fan up or down in speed from the outside of the case.

Yeah a knob came with this one that has a low and high setting, low yields 400ish rpms, and high yields 900 rpms.

Wierd part is with the stock heat sink, we took it off too and applied new thermal paste correctly, put it back on and it had a fan mounted on it that ran at 2200 rpm's yet still showed the same heat on the cores as this big thing, coincidence?

i would say it is the fan something is wrong with it. or it is pluged in wrong to the motherboard. that could cause the low rpm

No, it's correct, it's plugged into the only space on the mobo that it can properly fit. I guess we will take it back tomorow and exchange it for another. What happens if it's the same deal then what should we do?

i would try a different kind of fan/heatsink combo, did you get it at bestbuy?

What does the fans 3 pin header on the mobo say? ie PWM, CPU, PWR

If it's a CPU fan, it should be connected to either CPU or PWM.

Have you tried plugging the fan into the 4 pin slot? A 3 pin will still work on a 4 pin slot.

Oh really now? Does it matter wich prong you leave out?

it should match up will the clip on the cpu fan power cord. it should go into it only one way with one pin left out.

should be four pins sticking out of the mobo with a piece of plastic sticking up behind them the power cord should sit right into it and kind of wrap around the plastic piece sticking out.

sorry hard to explain.
