    laptop CPU upgrade-compatibility questions

not quite an overclocking question but i figured you guys would probably know what to tell me haha

i have an hp dv6238 laptop
intel dual core t2250 1.73GHz cpu

(not sure exactly what other info you need, do let me know. i have everest and can pull most right off there. unfortunately chipset comes up as "unknown" but if you can tell me another way to find it i'll do so.)

i'd like to upgrade to something

"2.6 GHz Pentium D CPU, or 1.8 GHz Core 2 Duo, or equivalent"

having read the dv6000 (which seem to all use the same motherboard) maintenance/service list it suggested intel t7200 as the top (unsure if its top in terms of what was available when it was written or top in terms of what this system can support) but i've had mixed comments on whether its actually compatible so i'm at a loss

any help would be greatly appreciated

ideally i'd like something thats pretty much a "drop in" replacement that wont require me to change everythign else and in effect cause me to have to rebuild the entire computer (at which point i may aswell get a new more up to date one since this is about 3 yrs old now hahaha)

    thanks again all

    Re: laptop CPU upgrade-compatibility questions

You can upgrade(assuming you have 943GML chipset) to any Socket M cpu here without any BIOS upgrade:
List of Intel Core microprocessors - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
T2700 is very expensive but T2500 not very far off from T2700.
If you like C2D, the best value for money is T7200 as T7400 and T7600 are over priced IMO. You have to upgrade to the latest BIOS.
List of Intel Core 2 microprocessors - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
You also must find out what chipset you have using CPU-z. Post the screen shot of the findings.

thanks for replying so quick, wasnt expecting that

i just print screened the CPU and mainboard tabs, let me know if you need others

t7200 looks like it'll be perfect for what i need so thats what i was looking at but i dont want to buy it and then find its not gonna work

i also wonder, probably the best place to be asking this, my heatsink/fan seems to be a bit dodgy. not sure if its faulty or what
but from very early on the base of my laptop is so hot its painful to put on your lap (and so lives on top of a book haha but you can still feel its getting hot) and the fan seems to run constantly and is kinda loud at times, is there something better i can put in? or would it be worth getting the same thing and replacing the current one?

it's very likely it needs a good clean out now, so i do wonder if that could fix the problem

Yes, you can upgrade to T7200 with that i945 chipset. You can use this as guide for cleaning out the fan(it's for an Acer laptop but the priciple is same). Good luck.

Use HW Monitor to watch the temps.

as for the clean out, i know the basic clear out. its getting into the damn thign in the first place =P

i have 2 panels that i can remove, neither of which are near the fan at all, so it'd involve a complete dismantle of the casing

    Re: laptop CPU upgrade-compatibility questions

I'm sorry I don't know anything about disassembly of your laptop, you have to find out from another HP forum or google for it. I don't think you have to change anything else. If I were you, I would even try without flashing the BIOS to see whether it works.
I think people do not like to commit themselves because they do not want to be blamed if anything goes wrong, I am sure you'll take necessary precautions while you do the upgrade like wearing an anti-static wrist band and be gentle with components.
If you are flashing BIOS, disconnect Internet, disable all background services like Windows defender, AV programs and do not interrupt the flashing. Let us know the success and all the best.

    Re: laptop CPU upgrade-compatibility questions

thanks very much for your help

just had a look at the HP site under updates for my laptop and found this

    BIOSDateVersionPreviousSize
» WinFlash for HP Notebook System BIOS (for Notebooks with Intel Processors) - Microsoft Windows/Vista-Based

    12-2008F.2D» Version:3.08M

would it be worth updating regardless of my looking at a new cpu?
if so, should i do so before or wait til after installing the new cpu?

there are 5 other versions between the one i have now and the current one... i assume its ok to go right from F.16 to F.2D?

    Re: laptop CPU upgrade-compatibility questions

If you are not going to upgrade and your laptop works fine, no need for BIOS upgrade.
If I were you, I'll fix the new cpu without flashing BIOS and will see whether it recognises the new cpu,if it doesn't recognise, I'll remove the new cpu and put the original cpu and flash the latest version of BIOS and try the new cpu. HTH.

is there a downside to updating the bios without a specific reason?

supposedly they have newer things to check up on temps and also mention of a fix for a slight lag in wake up from sleep mode which i have noticed which is why i was wondering
