Brand new to Powershell

Hi there,

Looking for the best place to start learning powershell. I have very little
previous scripting experience but am keen to learn powershell to complement
my 2008 studies.

Thanks
Gerry

You might want to pick up a book. If you are into learning the language
aspects of PowerShell, I recommend Windows PowerShell in Action. If you
learn better by example, then check out Windows PowerShell CookBook. If you
are low on cash, check out my Effective PowerShell blog post series:

Scripting with Windows PowerShell
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/scr.../hubs/msh.mspx

There are free books on scripting
PowerShell (and VBScript) at the
site too! The best "scripting book"
(is free there too) but is for VBScript

Microsoft TechNet: Microsoft Windows
2000 Scripting Guide
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/scr...e/default.mspx

(but it all can be used with a new
PowerShell "scripter" too).

Read and try what one reads!

Another no-cash-required option is my podcast. We record weekly and discuss
tips, resources, news, and have the occasional interview with PowerShell
superstars.

There's also got a great community site going at http://powershellcommunity.org.
We've got blogs, forums and more over there.

I write a free short weekly column, Prof. PowerShell, which you might want to pick up at Microsoft Certified Professional Magazine Online | Managing the Windows Network

Re: Brand new to Powershell

Hey Gerry,

to me it's a 3-step thing:

1. Windows PowerShell in Action by Bruce Payette for the background info
on why PS works the way it does
2. Windows PowerShell Cookbook by Lee Holmes, for actual code examples and
how-to's
3. Check out other people's code, and experiment with doing your own

I just received "Windows PowerShell: TFM (2nd ed.)" by Don Jones & Jeff Hicks,
looks to be a lot of good stuff in here.

Re: Brand new to Powershell

Hey Hal,

I hope so. I bought the first edition, and was very very disappointed by
it. So I'm kinda not buying the 2nd edition too,
unless of course they're throwing a free eBook version my way
