Execute from command line with environment variable in path

An admitedly newbe question:

I'm trying to execute a program by using an environment variable in the path:

PS> $env:vs80comntools\..\..\sdk\v2.0\Bin\xsd.exe

This doesn't work. How do you get this to work?
