newline in Write-Debug or Write-Verbose

I am trying to use a newline with either Write-Debug or Write-Verbose:

$VerbosePreference="Continue"

$message= "line1" + "`n" + "line2"

Write-Verbose $message

I am expecting to see line1 and line2 appearing on different lines, but no
such luck. Same story with Write-Debug. At the same time Write-Output
$message works as expected.

Were Write-Verbose and Write-Debug meant to support newlines? How would I go
about doing it?

Thanks,
VR
