Announce: powershell-users mailing list

I've just created a 'powershell-users' group within Googlegroups. What
this gives the PowerShell community is a general mailing list for
everyone to join. Google account required, but hopefully that won't be
much of an issue.

I've considered creating a 'powershell-nntp' or such group, but with RSS
being what it is today, that is likely a much better solution (having an
RSS reader to take care of such things).

I am hoping this mailing list will be useful to users in general.

Feedback/comments are always welecome.

Group name: powershell-users

Description: Windows PowerShell users. This is mainly a group for
Windows PowerShell users such as system administrators, database
administrators, and anyone else interested in PowerShell.

Group/web address:
http://groups.google.com/group/powershell-users

Current email address:
powershell-users@googlegroups.com

Now back to PowerShell'ing...

Marco

Frankly, I don't see why we would want this with the existing email &
web features provided by Google Groups already.

http://groups.google.com/group/micro...ws.powershell/

Now we have two divergent communities with the membership and
conversations potentially split in half. Or worse, the mailing list
will "do better" than the newsgroup, leaving it to falter and
newcomers will assume "Oh, Powershell must not be that popular because
the 'official' Microsoft newsgroup is deserted".

Don't mean to come down so hard but I don't get it...

Sorry Marco, but I'm 110% with Hal on this one. We get nothing out of
creating a separate google group for powershell; in fact, all we do is
restrict people from joining it without a google account and dilute
the fairly vibrant group we already have. Usenet is and always will be
the best place for truely open discussion like this. I don't doubt
your motives at all, so don't take offence

Perhaps the list will go nowhere. I understand your concern, but there
are others who may not want to post to the official group for various
reasons, one being time.

The community forked the day PowerShell was released, but I think
there's a plan underway to bring things together, but I don't know the
full details.

There are a few PowerShell forums out there now, for example.

One thing I'd like to see about the offical group is being able to
subscribe to it, and receive everything by email, and easily be able to
respond, and have that response get posted to the group.

The "Google NNTP interface" only allows web viewing and answering using
a browser.

Maybe there's a way I can get the 2 to talk to each other in a limited
fashion though to bring the 2 together. I'll have to think about it.

I always appreciate everyone's input whether positive or negative...

Marco
