Redirection of stdout adding lots of empty lines

I think I've seen this kind of thing mentioned before.
Just like to know if there is any explanation for this behaviour:

PS> $a = powershell -noprofile {del * -rec -whatif}; $a
What if: Performing operation "Remove Directory" on Target "C:\test\1".

What if: Performing operation "Remove Directory" on Target "C:\test\2".

What if: Performing operation "Remove Directory" on Target "C:\test\3".

################################################

PS> powershell -noprofile {del * -rec -whatif}
What if: Performing operation "Remove Directory" on Target "C:\test\1".
What if: Performing operation "Remove Directory" on Target "C:\test\2".
What if: Performing operation "Remove Directory" on Target "C:\test\3".

Re: Redirection of stdout adding lots of empty lines

Since I'm no guru I'll let one explain the technical stuff, but here's the
workaround:

$ofs = ''
$a = "$(powershell -noprofile {del * -rec -whatif})" -replace "`n$"
$ofs = ' '
$a

Re: Redirection of stdout adding lots of empty lines

Shorter workaround:

write-host $(powershell -noprofile {del * -rec -whatif}) -s '' -n
