    SBS + Member Servers

    Hi,

I was told once SBS is not able to have a backup domain controller. is
    this the case?

I want to have SBS + backup domain controller for authentication in case
the SBS needs to reboot or whatnot.

    Thanks

SBS supports additional domain controllers. However, when the SBS server
goes down, you won't have access to user shared folders, Exchange mail,
Sharepoint, ISA firewall, Internet (if a 2 NIC setup), etc.

    Have you tested this?

afaik, you could logon to the workstation using cached credentials for days
without the server present. After normal business hours, logoff a
workstation, unplug the server's patch cable, and try logging back on to the
    workstation.

The issue really is not that the workstations will not be able to logon, but
rather that they won't have access to any resources while the SBS is off
line. Therefore, the best use of resources is a "bullet proof" server, with
fault tolerant drives, redundant power supplies, a true server class system
board with a discrete drive controller, and a oversized UPS. If really
worried about a mobo failure, get a spare.

And, keep good backups and images, and keep a current one off site.
