Re: Migration from SBS2003 to SBS2008, fatal domain error

    Hi Merv,

I am trying to migrate to SBS2008(new equipment not using odl equipment)
    from SBS2003..however i am geting the :
"FATAL: DcPromo_JoinDomain: The server was not promoted to a domain
    controller"

I only have one NIC on the source server, and the following solution fails:

    On SBS 2003 machine:
    -Domain Controller Security Policy
    -Local Policies
    -User Rights Assignment
-Enable Computer and user accounts to be trusted for delegation
    -Add domainname\Domain Admins
    -gpupdate /force
    -Restart new installation.

when i go to sbs2003 and try to perform the above i get an error that says
"failed to open the group policy object. You may not have appropriate rights"
Details: The specified domain either does not exist or cannot be contacted".

I am unsure how to proceed with the migration, i am and a stand still right
    now.

From sbs2008, when i click finish after the error of the dcpromo_joindomain,
it takes me to the sbs2008 desktop.

Please help me go past this point...do i reinstall and attempt the migration
again?(tried 5 times already) or can i still migrate with the current state?

also, I ran the BPA on sbs2003, and everything went well there, however
after i ran the sourcetool and the answer file, sbs2003 exchange is not
starting all services...such as exchange server. I have to manually eneable
    them from services.msc.

    please help me out...

    Thank you

why are you trying to join the SBS 2003 server to the domain? What
procedures did you follow for this migration?

Re: Migration from SBS2003 to SBS2008, fatal domain error

    Hi Allen,

I am not trying to join sbs2003 to the domain...the error comes from the
    sbs2008 migration.

I followed the migration guide from Microsoft word per word...

When I insert the SBS2008 DVD in the destination server(sbs2008)...it goes
through the process of installing, it finds my answer file from the source
server(sbs2003) that i have on a removable media, then at some point the
fatal error of DCPROMO_JOINDOMAIN comes up....

Re: Migration from SBS2003 to SBS2008, fatal domain error

Did you do all the prerequisites on the source server (sbs 2003) as
required. Applied all updates and services packs, Did you raise the
functional level for AD as well as the forest?

Re: Migration from SBS2003 to SBS2008, fatal domain error

I believe you need to insert the removable device with the answer file onto
the destination server (sbs 2008). Check you documentation again.

Re: Migration from SBS2003 to SBS2008, fatal domain error

I copy the answer file that was created from the sbs2003 on to a flash drive..

Then i plug it into the destination server(sbs2008)...

i put the dvd sbs2008 installation disk in, it runs the processes, it finds
the answer file from the flash drive just fine!

however i still get the error...sigh.

Re: Migration from SBS2003 to SBS2008, fatal domain error

Well chris I was hoping I could help resolve your issues and had thought the
answer key was the problem. I misintepetted your email regarding this
because of the way you worded it. I've done this process about a month ago
and had no issues. All I can suggest is that you reread the process and
double check all the steps. You never know what may come about the second
time around. Just another quick stupid question here. You are aware that SBS
2008 can only be installed on 64-bit hardware? I'm lost for any other
suggestions so good luck and go over the documentation again
    "slowly".................
