Hi all,



I recently 'retired' a member server in our SBS 2003 network by using the
'remove computer' item in the Server Manager. It seems that several
workstations in our office are still 'querying' the old server based on
results from MS Netmon. Where or why could these workstations continue to
query the server and how do I get them to stop? It is causing response
issues with one of our 3rd party apps and Outlook.

Any insight would be greatly appreciated. I have flushed DNS, made sure
there were no legacy entries in the WINS database...what would be next?

From the server itself you should have removed the server from the domain
and join a workgroup and rebooted that server. This will remove it from AD
as a member server of the AD domain as well as the computer account. what
you did was simply removed the computer account. You may have to do a
metadata cleanup remove any and all instances of that server. You can also
try rejoining that server back to the domain and removing as I described.

I may give the join/remove a try to see if that clears before I use
NTDSUTIL.

Check your login scripts and GPO. Did enable DNS or something like
that with GPO?
Search the registry of a culprit workstation for the server name,
where does it show?

I tried every single suggestion upthread and could never resolve the issue.
For some twisted reason that I could never discern, the offending
workstations (5 out of 30) continued to poll for the successfully removed
server. No references to the server in GPO nor the registries of the
workstations. The application that was being provided by the disjoined
server was also deleted entirely from the desktops. A reboot and
'ipconfig /displaydns' always listed a reference to the deleted server...I
could never figure out why this reference returned.

I gave up and reformatted/reinstalled all of the problem machines with ghost
image. I spent more time that I should have bird dogging the problem and it
still bugs me that I could not correct. Thanks goodness it was not a
company wide issue...
