SBS 2008 Backup USB Drive Offline

    SBS 2008 Backup USB Drive Offline

    I have a client with a new SBS 2008 Installation running on a Dell T300 using
    Buffalo USB disks for backup. When first inserted and added as backup
    destinations the backup is successful. However, if left connected the USB
    drives are no longer seem to be recognised. If the server is rebooted the USB
    drives are recognised and the next backup is successful.

    Why do the USB drives appear to go offline as far as the SBS backup is
    concerned? What can I do to resolve the issue?

    Is the drive going to sleep? Some will power down - that's a good thing, so
    long as they wake up!.

    Other than that, perhaps a power setting on the server, either OS or bios,
    that is in 'energy saving' mode and won't wake up?

    I have a T300, with 2 external USB disks connected; neither is going
    off-line, but then neither is a Buffalo.

    I have not used any of the later model Buffalo drives, but the older ones
    used to have a manual/auto switch on the back. With the "auto" setting, the
    drive was supposed to power itself on and off based on input from the PC.
    If you've got that switch, you might try setting it to manual. I used to
    get the same symptom on my Buffalo until I discovered that switch.

    Buffalo is a crappy device, try switching to something more Commercial.
    My experience with clients that purchased those devices has been less
    than desirable.
