Migrating to 2008 from a backup hard drive (no 2003 server)

Migrating to 2008 from a backup hard drive (no 2003 server)

Does anyone know if it is possible to migrate to SBS 2008 without a source
    server?

for instance, the server that was running SBS 2003 died and is no longer
available. I have a mirrored drive that I am connecting via USB to the new
server to move the Data (shared files) to the new server.

AD has to be re-created from scratch as well as other applications.

    any help would be appreciated.

There is no "migration" that can be done, without a source server and if a new AD has already been created you couldn't do a migration at this point even if the source was still available unless you started over.

If there is no migration path for this, how can I get the exchange data back
    from the old system?

You would have to do an exchange recovery first...
Most likely...even with just a beefy PC you'll have to rebuild and restore SBS 2003, then do the migration from there.

If the old SBS is not bootable, you could use a utility such as Ontrack
(there are others), to extract the data out of the EDBs into PSTs that you
have saved in your backup (in program files\exchsrver\mdbdata). Then once
all your new users have been created and mailbox enabled, pump the PSTs into
their mailboxes. Same goes with PFs.

    Bill:

If the workstations were not disjoined from the domain, you should be able
to logon to them using domain credentials and open Outlook in cached mode
from the OST, then copy the exchange mailbox to a local PST for importing
    into your new store.
