    Backup server

In a few weeks I will be replacing my server platform and SBS2003 with a new
server platform and sbs2008. The most important function of the new server
will be exchange and file sharing. I have a few questions:

1.How can I utilise the old server platform and sbs2003 as a backup server.
In the event the new server goes down. It would be nice to “flick a switch”
and bring the old server back up again temporarily, so that employees can get
    on with their work.

    2. I have read the document “Introduction to Windows Small Business Server
2003 for Enterprise IT Pros” at
    http://www.microsoft.com/DownLoads/d...displaylang=en
.. Is there something like this for SBS2008 to get me going?

3.Transfering the necessary data across to the new server .

I need to make sure before I start this process that I have all my checks
    and balances in place.

I think you should review the guide how to perform migration from SBS 2003 to
    SBS 2008

    Hi Jack:

As a frequent visitor here, you are already familiar with most of the rules
of SBS. The most riged of which is that there can be only one SBS in the
AD, and that it must hold all the FSMO roles.

In addition to the limit above, there are comptability considerations between
Server 2003 and Server 2008 implimentations of core components, and even
if there weren't, the problem of keeping the users and the data set current
between two dissimilar servers, and the fact that the exchange databases
are not compatible.... the list goes on.

If you wish to make use of the old hardware, format it after you have the
new SBS installed and install Windows Server 03 or 08 and use it as a terminal
server. Or better, perhaps, install WHS and use it as a backup server for
the SBS and up to 9 workstation.

Thanks for your reply. I like the option of the Windows Home Server. There
are a few PCs on the network on which this can be used. I am sure that the
boss will be well rested knowing that his old server still has value.

    Re: Backup server

It actually is a very real and very good way to keep the "critical"
workstations backed up. In most organizations there are workstations that
would be hours, if not days, to rebuild, or have settings that the users
have developed over time and would be time consuming to replace. Think
Marketing, Engineering, Accounting and so on.

MS has officially blessed this use of WHS. It is unfortunate that it is
called "Home", but I tell customers it is Windows Backup Server when
describing it, and then tell them of the "real" MS Name.
