    SBS2008 SmartHost and POP3 connector

    Hi All,

Can you please explain how should I set up SBS2008 to achieve
    following?

    1. Existing small office has a peer to peer network. I am setting up a
SBS2008 and migrating all users to domain.

    2. Existing Emails are hosted a webhost with company domain name. Users
use Outlook to POP for receiving emails and SMTP to send emails by using
SMTP and POP3 server to be mail.companydomainname.com.

    3. I will create, initially, all email accounts under POP3 connector
configuration on SBS exchange and then exchange will push those emails
to the users. Outgoing emails will go directly from the SBS exchange.

    4. Should I use mail.companydomainname.com as smarthost on the SBS
config and also have my ISP add reverse DNS PTR for my static IP?
However I have big confusion as my ISP will have to map PTR with my
mail.companydomainname.com, which is not actually my SBS exchange, but
is my webhost, which have MX records for my companydomainname.com.

    Please help.

    Thanks

Re: SBS2008 SmartHost and POP3 connector

Your first goals should be to:
Create an A record called remote.domainname.com and point that to the Public IP address which will be used for this new installation.
    Then
Create a new MX record for your domain with a better priority than the current MX record which points to the new A record

You can use the POP3 connecter on a very temporary basis but not long term

You will need to check with the current mail host to see if they will act as a smarthost.

Yes Have the ISP create the PTR/reverse dns lookup

Re: SBS2008 SmartHost and POP3 connector

Appreciate Cris for your prompt response.

Since I have limited knowledge on the DNS subject, can you clarify
    following:

"Create an A record called remote.domainname.com and point that to the
Public IP address which will be used for this new installation."

I believe this entry has to be created on the DNS server of current
webhosting company, that is acting as authoritative DNS for the domain
    name.

    "Then
Create a new MX record for your domain with a better priority than the
current MX record which points to the new A record."

If current webhost MX (tested with nslookup, set type=mx,
companydomainname.com), is something like mx1.megamailservers.com with
perefernce of 10, what should be the new MX be? Can I have webhost add
mx2.companydomainname.com with a preference of 5 in to DNS records of
    the domain?

"You can use the POP3 connecter on a very temporary basis but not long
    term"

If all goes well, I do plan to remove POP3 connector and have SBS
exchange send and receive emails within 1 month or so.

You will need to check with the current mail host to see if they will
    act as a smarthost.

Webhsoting company may not act, but new ISP will. So initial plan is
that sent email goes out direct, but emails are still received by
webhost and then exchange will POP them.

"Yes Have the ISP create the PTR/reverse dns lookup"

    Something like:

5.2.0.192.in-addr.arpa pointing back to SBS exchange host name of
    remote.companydomainname.com.

    Is this okay?

    Please advise.

Thanks a lot for all your help and support.

Yes the DNS records will be where ever the authoritative DNS servers for the domain are hosted

your new mx record would be 0 remote.domainname.com (which is what you created for the A record in the other step) which inturn points to your public IP
