SBS 2008 shows nothing but black screen and arrow

    Hi all

Got a SBS 2008 that seems to working (in most) fine, i.e. I can access
shares etc, but when it boots I just get a black screen and an arrow. I've
tried all the normall stuff like trying to boot in vga mode, and safe mode
but no matter which option I choose it shows the Microsoft Corp banner with
the status bar then goes to the black screen.

I've also tried to RDP in to it and all that happens is it doesn't connect,
even though I can see the relevent services are running on the server (yea I
    can remote manage the server).

Some of the services won't start (e.g. Exchange Info Store) with a 1068
dependency service or group failed, but I think that is unrelated.

Will try a different graphics card in the server (HP ML350 G5) tomorrow but
have a feeling it may make no difference.

    Any help much appreciated.

    Hello Gazuk,

    Thanks for your post.

Based on your description of the symptoms, I think it is more hardware related such as improper driver or lack of update or missing of system dll files. Have you contacted
the computer vendor to confirm if the model is right to install SBS 2008? Meanwhile, have you checked the Event logs?

Please also run the SBS BPA tool for a detection. The Windows Small Business Server Best Practices Analyzer examines a server that is running Windows Small Business
Server (Windows SBS) and presents a list of information and errors that administrators should review.

Please post back any related error messages if found any.

    Hope this helps.

    Best regards,

    Hi,
I have exactly the same problem! I have tried all sorts to fix it including using the Repair feature on the SBS2k8 disk and I have also tried bootrec.exe /fixmbr but none of it was successful (even though the CMD Prompt told me it was!).

Gaz - how do you know if any of the services has started..? I cannot even boot up in Safe Mode.
Let me know if you have found a fix, would you..?

A black screen sounds like a corrupted event log. Can you install SP2
on this system in any way?

    Hi Gaz,

Thanks for your response. You are welcome.

I am sorry to know you reinstalled the system to fix this issue finally. However if the system is not responding at all and even cannot use Event Viewer to perform basic checking and troubleshooting,
sometimes rebuilding the system is not a bad idea. Next time if you may try a " sfc /SCANNOW "( /SCANNOW Scans integrity of all protected system files and repairs files with) if system files are missing or
    corrupted.

Again, thank you for posting in the SBS newsgroups. Please feel free to contact us again in the future.
