SBS 2008 Premium - HD failing

    HI,

I have an SBS 2008 Premium server. The system disk has begun to fail
its SMART tests, and a chkdsk found bad blocks. I'm going to be
returning the drive as its under warranty, with an advance replacement
    (hopefully).

I'm wondering what would be the best way to proceed. The system is
running for now, and backups have been running twice daily.

Almost all of the data, including Exchange, Sharepoint, and the users
RedirectedFolders are stored on a RAID 5 array, and none of the disks
in the array are having problems. The system disk is a single disk by
    itself.

Should I install SBS again on the new disk, then restore from backup?
Can I somehow restore directly from backup?

    Thanks
    Andy

You should probably reinstall SBS (im assuming 2008) and then restore from the backup, I I I know this is a hassle but it is the best option if you dont want any problems. also the system disk should be Raid 1 array. (so Get 2 identical hard drives for the system and set them up in the BIOS, this will save you some hassle when one of them fails again you should really know that)
Backups running twice daily is a bit hard core, perhaps use a tape drive and install backup exec, and just rotate between 2 weeks of tapes, this is normally the preferable option.

Backups running twice daily is the default with the native backup system--it works, and doesn't involve much load on the system.

You can do a bare metal restore following the procedure here:

Well, its physically impossible to seup a mirror for the system disk.
I have 6 SATA ports; one for the system, one for the CD drive, and 4
    for the raid 5 disks.

Also, I'm under the impression that having the system disk backed up
is to help take care of disk failures..

How often do you use that CD drive? Get a USB pluggable instead.

Backups are *always* essential, but mirroring provides not only redundancy,
but also performance (read) gains by having data on two different drives
    (spindles).

Bill, those instructions worked perfectly! Sorry for the delayed
response, the replacement drive took a while to arrive. Anyway, the
    system came right back flawlessly!

KJ, I appreciate the feedback, but the honest answer is that I use the
CD drive more often than I've had the system disk fail. I appreciate
the feedback, but in this case I don't think a mirror is warranted.
