    Group Policy Preferences and Win7

    Hello,

I had an old post stated the Group Policy Preferences on SBS 2008 did
not work well with Windows 7. I was wrong. The Group Policy
Preferences did work with Win 7. You can map drive, create/connect
printers, add a shortcut on your desktop, or make a scheduled task by
using a group policy preference. No any scripting needed. Very cool
feature. However, there is still one item not working. I would like to
hide the Picture and Music Folder on the start menu. There is a Start
Menu item in Group Policy Preferences. However it only target at
Windows XP and Windows Vista. Nothing for Win 7. So I created a
preference for Vista just to try my luck, and of course, it's not
working...all the other preferences applied successfully. Anyone has a
work around for this??Or I guess there should be a GPO patch/update/
template to download to get this work...

Thanks for your help and info!

    Ben

    Hi Ben,

Thanks for your post and Jim's input.

In addition, as the Picture and Music folder on the start menu are controlled by registry keys, you may try to write a script to remove the related registry keys and set it as logon script and assign the
group policy to Vista users group.

Please open Regedit.exe and find the following location:

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced

The following keys are what you need to control the Picture and Music folder on the start menu:

    Name Type
    Start_ShowMyMusic REG_Dword
    Start_ShowMyPics REG_Dword

Based on my tests, the value 1 = "Display as a link" , 2 = "Display as a menu", 0 = "Don't display this item"

For more information that you can change it from UI console:

Windows Vista Start Menu ( similar to Windows 7)

    Hope this helps.
