    Virtualization and Server Consolidation

    Hi folks,

I'm currently running SBS2003 and four other Server 2003 machines. Most of
these servers are 4-5 years old (Non-profit agency), and are in need of
replacement. My plan is to purchase new HW and move to SBS2008 and Server
2008 where I can. A friend of mine has been encouraging me to look at
virtualization of my environment. I've not done it before, but was looking
for advice from those how have in a SBS environment.
I haven't looking in the licensing stuff, except to get a couple of quotes
on HP and Dell servers - and the Dell rep told me with Server 2008 Enterprise
    you could virtualize 4 machines.
I don't have a proper server room, so I constantly have A/C issues and the
room runs hot, so having less machines is desirable. My SBS box runs
exchange and we have some SQL databases, and my other servers run Terminal
Server, File and Print, and the company financial apps.
I'm really thinking if I buy a fairly decent box, I could virtualize 3-4 of
my servers, and/or consolidate down to just a couple. I probably don't need
a separate box for TS, but I have it now because of the need we had at the
time. I'm thinking of a separate box for SBS2008, and a box to virtualize
    everything else.
Anyone want to offer any advice who has virtualized their SBS environment?

Virtualization can definitely help here, and probably cut your heat issues
as well. As for licensing, you should investigate www.techsoup.org. If your
non-profit qualifies, you can get the software licenses for a small fee.

Charlie, yes I use it today. I will likely purchase the SBS2008 and Server
    Standard/Enterprise from them.
