    Users / CAL

I am preparing to setup a SBS Server at one of my clients, but
starting to worry a little about the licensing.

    They are 7 "normal" users.

that is users with mail address, access to 3 fileshares, VPN from
outside, you know, a normal user

Then from time to time, they have maybe 15-25 students doing some
projects at their office, each bringing a laptop, and have to access
one of the fileshares (And only that share)

So I was kind of wondering if it was possible to do this, without
having to buy a CAL pr. student that would access this one folder

(If all the students have same name, would they only count as one
    user?)

(If alle students accesed the server as "guest" - would that count
    them as one user?)

Just dont wanna buy like 30 extra CAL licenses for this, then it would
be much cheaper to just buy a NAS and have that share this one folder.

Hope to get reply soon, so I can send my offer to my client

    Regards

    Steen

    Re: Users / CAL

I had been doing a little Google, but never found it so clear as the
    pages you found, thanks

SBS 2003, each user that "authenticate" against the server needs a CAL

SBS2008, SBS 2008 CAL Suite: For each user or device accessing the SBS
    network

That would mean that a SBS 2008 is out of the question, as "accessing"
would even mean getting DHCP Address from the server..

But it dosen't answer my question, is a "guest" authenticating against
    SBS2003 ?

    regards

An even the other question still stands, if 15 computers access the
SBS2003 using the same username, does they count as one ?

    Re: Users / CAL

Dosent matter, I had just hoped a SBS, with 10 CAL Licenses could do
the trick, if it has to be SBS2003 to allow the access without having
to buy all these CAL Licenses, it's just SBS2003

(Would also make it easier, as I got 10 SBS2003 servers running, but 0
    SBS 2008

    Re: Users / CAL

I am pretty sure my phonebill will take a big suffer, if I call US..

    (I am from Denmark, europe)

I dont care which SBS version, just the one that could allow for not
having to buy a CAL for each student that access the server.

I have a costumer that went broke in end 2009, so I got a 1/2 year old
server with SBS2003, so of course I would prefer SBS2003

    Re: Users / CAL

Okay, thanky for clearifying this to me..

Unfortunately they all come at the same days.

Telemarketing, the ususal employees prepare the work, and when it is
ready, all these students come at the same day..

So I better go for a NAS for their fileshares, and hosted Exchange for
the 5-7 users that needs that...

    Re: Users / CAL

You have all the good arguments, but I haven't clarified what they got
    today.

    1. Linksys NAS

    2. Hosted "light" Exchange (Only webmail, no Outlook access)

So it would be very fast / easy to make an upgrade on their hosted
Exchange, and the rest would allready be running.

(couple of other changes though, but that would be anyways - change
local IP's from 192.168.1.1 to get VPN working from outside, and
backup to en external location from their NAS)
