Migration from SBS2003 to Full Server 2008

    Hi,

I currently have an old SBS 2003 (non R2) installation with extra DC's at a
    couple of remote sites.

I want to migrate to full Server 2008R2 with Exchange 2010, and am looking
for the best way of acheiving this with minimum downtime. I have considered
SBS2008 and EBS 2008 but neither are appropriate for what we need.

I was originally thinking of building a new environment exporting all the
data copying to the new environment, then manually moving all the PC's over.
This would be a big bang approach, and very labour intensive to avoid too
    much downtime.

I am now wondering if I can introduce a new Server 2008R2 server, and a new
server to Run Exchange 2010 (with all the nescessary CALs of course) into the
existing environment, and mailbox move, transfer roles etc to these new
machines. This would be much easier in terms of down time, but am not sure
if this approach will work with SBS, and if it will remove all the user
limits and restrictions SBS places on the domain / forest or if these will be
lurking in AD after removing the original box.

Any ideas or suggestions gratefully appreciated?

    Many thanks,

    Fred.

I am in the same boat. I have to go with enterprise due to the email fize
size limits, we way over 18GB. I want to go with 2008r2 enterprise and
exchange 2010. I am going to run my exhange in hyper-v (separate server).
Maybe Fred is thinking along the same lines. I guess the swing method will
    not work going to enterprise.

Any edition of Exchange 2007 and forward will suppor practically unlimited
message store. The only limit with SBS 2008 it the 75 users/workstations.

If you need more, then EBS is a great solution, up to about 300 users.
