does remove require a re-start

    does remove require a re-start

I want to remove some apps to free up disk space.

Do they require a system re-start?

    remove:

    Windows Server 2003 Resource Kit
    Windows Server 2003 Deployment
    Media player.

I would do this remotely, if it does not require a re-start.

I cannot find the answer on the Web?

    thx

Depends on the application. Some apps when removed properly, using
Add/Remove Programs, may require a restart. I believe removing Media Player
will need a restart. The reskit doesn't. Not sure about the Deployment
thing. For any others, you will need to check with the application vendor.

And if you are doing this remotely, you can still restart it, unless there's
something wrong with the OS that it doesn't come up properly when
    restarting.

Microsoft add-on products that require a reboot will give you the option of
rebooting immediately or at a later stage. Note also that deleting apps to
free up disk space will not really get you out of the predicament of having
a full disk. Moving the paging file would be better, moving all user files
better again and installing a larger disk is best of all. You should also
delete your .tmp and .dmp files.

Yes - I was looking at the pageing file. How do you do that correctly?

You follow the path Control Panel / System / Advanced / Performance /

You can place the paging file on any physical or logical drive. Some people
think that there are performance issues when you place the paging file on a
drive other than the system drive. You need to do some homework with Google
    to form your own opinion.

I think placing it on another physical drive or spindle other than the
system drive will improve performance. However, I don't really see the value
of putting on a different "partition" that is on the same physical spindle
(RAID 5 or not) that the system drive is on. The I/O calls for both the OS
and the system "drive" are still on the same spindle.

But if John's just looking to free up space on his system partition, he
doesn't have much choice than to move it to a different partition.

That makes me think, how large is the system partition (assuming it's C:
    drive)?

Are there any non-essential data stored, such as app installation files? The
Windows update KB folders in the \windows folder can also be deleted for
space. The Windows update files can also be deleted/reset as well, for added
    space.

    Thanks guys

My C: partition i s only 15.6 GB and yes I do need to gain more space on the
    system partition.

What about all the log files?

I will look at the links you supplied. I have never thought about removing
    the update files.

I do want to put the pagefile.sys on another partition - again it is ok with
    Raid 5??

    thx

Yes, it's fine putting it on a different partition. In your case, it's
alleviating space, but as for performance, I see no real gain because the
partitions are on the same spindle.

What log files are you referring to?
