Has anyone experenced the formatting of a NTFS drive to be much slower than
it was in Server 2003 ?

is also based on the controller type and drive type. For instance, I
recently installed Windows 2008 and did a full format (not a quick) with a
RAID5 on a Dell 2950 with five 146 GB SAS 15k drives. If I remember
correctly, the format progress bar zipped across the screen and completed it
in a few minutes.
If there are any issues with the controller or the drive itself, or it's an
IDE or SATA, it will take longer.
What type of hardware do you have?

HP DL360 G5
(2) - SAS 72 GB hot pluggable, RAID 1+0
After the system is up and I formated the remaining space it tkaes as long
as if it was a IDE harddrive without RAID.
But the same system with Server 2003 takes only seconds.

Raid 1+0 is similar to mirroring but striped. So that wouldn't cause it. If
you go into the controller's config, does it show any errors on either
drives? Has write cache been disabled? Was this system up and running before
and you are now reinstalling it, or is this a new installation?

We use this particular server for testing.
It's not a old server by any means. I have installed several OS's on this
server a number of times but never had this type of experence with
formatting a drive. This isn't the only server I've seen this behavor on
from windows 2008 ent. I've seen the same thing on a HP ML350 G5 not too
long ago.

It's may possibly be a cache setting in the controller. Otherwise, I am not
sure. I've always used Dell for my installations. A couple of my customers
use HP, but I haven't seen this problem yet. I wind up converting them to
Dell when they're ready to upgrade, since I've been working with their
equipment for the past 8 years and haven't had any problems. I'm not saying
anything bad regarding HP, rather I'm just saying I'm more familiar wtih
Dell and have found them to be pretty consistent with their products, fast
support, etc.
