    Hello John,

Which backup software are you talking about? Which OS version is in use and
which Exchange version are you talking about?

    Best regards

    Hi Meinolf,

In addition to your questions, I have some additional questions to John, the
    original poster:

    What box is grayed out?

Is the backup software, whatever it is, being run directly on the Exchange
    server, or from another machine?

Is the Exchange server also a domain controller?

    Is the Exchange server multihomed?

    Sorry, two more questions:

Any errors in the Event logs?

Are all of the Exchange stores (Ex2003) or databases (Ex2007) mounted?

I am running 2k3 with the exchange being hosted on C drive which has
the DC.The box that is grayed out is Microsoft Exchange. Yes all
databases and stores are mounted. The backup is ntbackup and is run on
    the same machine.

    Hi John,

Any errors in the Event logs?

Can you take a snapshot of the screen and post it to one of the image
posting sites, such as photobucket.com or imageshack.com so we can what
    you mean?

    Thanks,

FYI, it's always recommended to not install Exchange on a DC. If it is,
it drastically reduces preformance of Exchange because a DC disables
write-behind cache to facilitate AD database functions, however it can
hurt Exchange by possibly losing emails during a suddent power outage.
It also affects a DC's performance, and makes it difficult to restore
    if lost.

If it's SBS, that is a different story.

Also note, when backing up Exchange, always back it up separate from a
System State backup. If you back it up together with a System State
backup, the Exxchange portion of the backup becomes useless. This is
due to the way it backs it up.
