problem burning video DVD in Media Center

Hello,
I have this strange problem with my media center. Whenever I try to use the 'burn Video DVD' in the media center, nothing really happens. When I select a recorded program to burn on DVD, the program starts. After a perhaps 1 hour or burning, my DVD writer opens with the new written DVD.
However, when I try to play this new dvd I notice that nothing is written on the DVD? I even takes vista a very long time to recognise the DVD...
Does anybody know why this is happening?

I run Vista 64 on a AMD Athlon 64 (3200) on a MSI K8T Neo motherboard with 2 GB Ram. My DVD writer is a Samsung WriteMaster. I can be a lack of space, because I have 500GB free on my HD.
Anybody an idea?

Thanks,

Bart

Out of curiosity, you don;t happen to have Nero InCD software installed do you?

No.
I tried Nero Burning Rom. However, it also gave an error when trying to burn a video DVD.
Funny thing is that is that I do not seem to have these problems with data DVDs. Burning these works out fine!?

Then we need to look at the video files you are trying to burn to DVD.

Are they DVD compatible Video files? (I'm not sure if Media centre converts video files.)

or perhaps you can answer: Where did you get the video files from?

exactly! Are you trying to burn a movie? it may be copywrite protected. a way to also test it would be to try burning a windows media player sample movie and see how that burns. check with the manufacturer I have heard of people having problems burning video on certain hp burners.

I don;t think it's a copyright problem as you would get an instant response rather than the writer going through the motions.

I suspect it's a video compatability issue or a video file corruption. quite often video files play OK even with a corruption but when it comes time to author or convert you could run into problems.

I work with a lot of video files but I have never used media centre to do the work. I tend to rely on third party programs.

Mpegs are generally problematic because of all the different codec used for compressions.

I tried to do the same job by using the windows dvd maker. Again I have the same problem. I succeed in writing the dvd with a recorded file (dvr-ms). If I leave it as a dvr-ms file, I have no problem. I can play the file on other PC's or on my mac.
If I try to convert it ti a normal PAL dvd, I am not able to open it. Nor my dvd or mac will open the fle. I can't even opne it on the PC on which I have writen the dvd.
So, I conclude I have a problem with the conversion toward the vdv format?!
Does anaybody know what could cause this?

Thanks,

Bart

The problem seems to be caused by the writable DVDs. I first tried it with the DVD-RW of Nashau. Those never worked. After trying all possible settings and hardware updates, I changed the only part of the chain I hadn't tested... the dvds themselfs. With the simple writable DWD + R of TDK evereything worked fluent.
Did anybody else ahd this problem? Does media center only work with DVD+RW?

What brand dvd player do you have? It could also be that.

It should work with either...it could be your recorder not liking -RW or -R or cheap media problems.

Stick with what works.
