No thumbnails in Media Center for home videos

I have not been able to get thumbnails in Media Center for my home videos. Media Center displays the file name and will play the videos, but I don't know what I am going to watch until I click "play".

I am using a Sony DCR SR 42 handycam, Sony editing software, and Vista premium 64. The software disk states not compatible w/64 bit, however it loaded on the first try, I can capture video, edit, and play video.

Thumbnails for videos show up in Pictures(default storage file), and Media Player, but not Media Center. So... ...am I overlooking a setting, or do I need a patch or maybe something else?

Hi Nashntth,

I'm having a similar problem as yourself and may have a solution for you.

I've installed the Vista Code Pack as advised and all my videos plays fine in both WMP 11 and MCE.

Thumbnails via Windows Explorer are also avaiable but I can't seem to get the thumbnails to display in MCE.

What i've found out is that MCE seems to only be able to display video thumbnails at the 1st folder level only. For example:

Sample 1 :
I added my entire Video partition (G:\) and all sub-folders into Watched Folders on MCE. And i get NO Thumbnails shown
My partition is arranged as :
G:\ -> Grey's Anatomy -> Season 1
G:\ -> Grey's Anatomy -> Season 2

But if i add a specific folder (eg Season 1 above) into Watched Folders on MCE, i can get to view all the thumbnails correctly.

Hope this helps.

I'll give that a shot. So, you have to add each individual sub-folder to see thumbnails?

guys, here's an update..

actually you don't have to add the specific sub-folder to view the thumbnails..
i've just tried by adding :

G:\ -> Grey's Anatomy

it will still display the thumbnails for each sub-folders inside.
seems that MCE is only able to display the thumbnails for folders ONE level downwards (hope you get my meaning)

i tried with just adding :

G:\

it does NOT work because MCE will have to go to TWO levels downwards for the actual videos..

i've attached some screendumps to better illustrate :geek:
