AverTV express card incompatibility with Media Center in Vista

Can anyone help?

I bought a Avermedia Express Hybrid Card, installed it with the program on the CD, also installed the Aver Media Center. When I start it, it says there might be problems with the Windows Media Center because of a file called ehRecvr, I shall terminate the "ehrecvr-services". Then I get a message like "The colour settings have changed to Vista light (? or similar)". Sometimes I even see a channel broadcasting, but some seconds later everything freezes, I get beautiful but useless coloured lines on the screen and the only thing I can do is to power-off the notebook.

I´ve got a Toshiba Satellite A210 with Vista only just installed a week ago. I tried to deinstall the Avermedia program but it told me I needed administrator rights (which I should have, since I´m the only user, how can that be?). When I start Windows Media Center instead of Aver Media Center the same things are happening.

Your help is very much appreciated.

Hi, fmm75, and welcome to the forums.

A couple of points for you to ponder:

  1. Although you may be running as an administrator, your privileges are not exclusive nor across the board. There are many things that will require for you to approve of before the tasks are carried out, and there are also some tasks that you will never be able to carry out without modification of the system - This is to protect you from yourself, as well as from many intrusion type techniques.
  2. The items about removing the ehrecvr file and the changing the color scheme to Vista Basic is normal of older applications, especially ones that make use of the video system - and I bet your Avermedia media center is older than Vista.
  3. Speaking of which, what do the installation instructions say about installation? For example, I have a Hauppage TV Tuner card for my desktop running Vista, and Hauppage recommends that I install the *driver* only and use Vista's built in Media Center, as opposed to installing their WinTV application....
  4. Which *exact* card did you buy, and are you sure it is 100% Vista compatible (not capable, but compatible - the semantics are important in this case)....
