Registry Repair/ Cleaner for Vista?

New Member
Does Vista need a registry cleaner/repair program? Is Vista better than XP at keeping the registry clean? If not, is there a program you would recommend?

Thanks

For a great free registry defragger, I like using Auslogics Registry Defrag.

If you need to repair the registry, then it is best to use the Vista System Restore with a retore point dated before the problem.

Hope this helps,

I've always used CCleaner, but I've found that registry cleaners are somewhat dependent on who's using them - to a degree, and if you look around the internet you'll find some backup in that registry cleaners are not the end-all of system problems like their makers often purport. Therefore my main motivation for using CCleaner is that it's also an uninstall launcher and cleans up temporary files and so on.

@ Brink -

I've heard a lot about Wise, I guess I'll look that up and give it a try.

I would recommend this prog: Auslogics BoostSpeed v4.1.4.135

Ive installed this for no reason and did all their scan/optimization, even if i had no problems, and damn...

I guess i had problems cause now everything is so faster! when i launch apps, games surfing the net, etc... oh and that internet optimizer thing did gave a boost to my downloads for some reason, before it was always capped at like 690kb/sec, and now i hit 760kb/sec... i seriously dindt get this one!

whatever, good prog!

-just a FYI last night I ran the Auslogics Registry Defrag- for the first time , not nice , I think it needed to be run in safe mode.

-first I saw the side bar icons corupted -no big deal
-then after a reboot McAfee, would not run -ok. big deal here
-could not reinstall the viris section -control panel blank
-tried to do a system restore but all my restore points including the one that auslogics made were gone !!!--really big deal
-tried windows repair -no luck
-tried my three week old vista back up -no luck
-found at some point , found my drives where renamed as local and single ,could be why the restore points where gone?
-came back to the forums found the sfc/scannow cmd, ran that ,when verify failed to past ,did it 4 times for both ,seemed better, each time smaller CBS file
-just before starting a clean install I removed IE8
-after that I could install McAfee and had my side bar icons back
-all is normal now nothing new in the CBS
-but maybe some checking with IE8 needs to be done with that program
-or I missed something in the set up.

Hi,

I've been using Wise registry cleaner - the disk cleaner is good too.

I used to use Auslogics registry defrag. tho. am currently using Quicksys - does the same job, and it's smaller and lighter

Quicksys RegDefrag - Defrag, Optimize and Compact Windows Registry

GlaryUtilities is a free all in one I've tried recently - includes lots of tools including regdefrag and file recovery - versions 2.6 on are x64 compatible

One for punishment I tried your Quicksys
-same thing McAfee had corruption - that it's utility could not fix.
-side bar icons corrupted -clock black circle with a red line where a clock hand might be,
-restores worked this time ok
-ran sfc/scannow no errors
-soooo I tried it in safe mode -no luck the same problems
-restored again ok

-so is there something wrong in my registry ,or just leave it alone ? any idea's ?

Hi,

Don't see how registry defrag could cause this problem - did you use a registry cleaner before you tried defragging it ?

If you did , you could try restoring the file the registry cleaner backed up.

Could also be a conflict with McAfee - maybe it "protects" certain registry keys.

Hi UNTAMED,

I do not see how a registry defragger could do this either. It sounds like McAfee may be blocking something or having problems of it's own as SIW2 suggested. You might consider uninstalling McAfee just as a test to see how your system runs without it.

If you still need to fix your system, then you might try doing a System Restore (Method Two below) using a restore point dated before the problem.

The system is running fine as long as I do not defrag the registry , so as you said it would be something with McAfee and Vista 64 (even in safe mode )
-for registry cleaners I only use CCleaner ,and sometimes I will Check off the one in McAfee
-but I did not use either before the defrags.
-when I get some time , I will uninstall McAfee .defrag. then reinstall for a test.
-But the first corruption was worst with IE8 installed.
-in any case , it has me looking for good backup software as the one that comes with the HP dosen't cut it.

-thanks for your time

Hi,

If you are looking for an alternative to McAfee , you might like the free

www.avast.com the home edition

You can turn off the functions you are not using, e.g. vrdbs, p2p, outlook.
It is a complete product with realtime protection - updates every 4 hrs.You get a free registration key - just need to re-register every 12mths.

I have found it so effective that Windows Defender has never had anything to do. I have had no conflicts with Vista.

Vista has a backup function, of course but you might try another free app, which is very configurable

Karen's Replicator

( you should already have VBRuntime on Vista so don't need to download that as well ).

Hope you find these useful

No McAfee is great , it's the only software I 'll pay money for. (and OS ),Norton I had lots of problems with in the past , Free -I won't trust it, to run stable.
-as it causing problems with both defragers ,I think even in safe mode the security centre is still active , as the icon is in the task bar ,could hide something in the registry ? to evade attack's who knows.

-vista home prem .dose not come with the full back utities .
-and for full system back ups I seem to be out of luck as the ones I looked at will not restore a clone to raid to my surprise.even the paid versions ($30.00). I'll keep looking.
