How to reinstall/repair Media Player 11?

Hello!

Could someone tell me how would I do this? I play Oblivion and it has been unstable, which I believe is due to non-default codecs. Is there any way to reinstall the whole Media Player or just restore the default codecs?

Thanks in advance!

Is Media Player broken, or is it that Oblivion is just unstable?

I believe it may be a Nero codec causing the instability.

4) Fix crap Nero codec:
Go to " C:\Program Files\Common Files\Ahead\ "
Rename folder " DSFilter " something else like " DSFilter_DISABLED "

NB. That is for XP, the Vista location may be different.

If MP11 is broken, have you tried running SFC ?

Type "cmd" into the Search box above the Start Button>and when cmd comes up
at the top of the Start menu>right click cmd and click "run as Admin" and
when the cmd prompt comes up at the cmd prompt type "sfc /scannow" no quotes
and let it run. This may fix things quite a bit. It replaces corrupt files
with intact ones, if you're not familiar with it.

If all else fails, uninstall MP11 and download/reinstall it from the MS site.

The system check fixed a file called secpol.msc, but it doesn't seem to be related to this in any way.

The media player works fine. I'd just like to get it back to use the default codecs as Oblivion doesn't seem to like non-default codecs. I do not have Nero or it's codecs installed. I only had the Vista Codec Pack from this forum installed.

Also, as the title indicates, I could not find a way to reinstall or repair WMP 11. That's why I created this thread to get help on that one.;)

Thanks for the answer.

umm, uninstall the codec pack perhaps? (If you haven't already) i assume Oblivion is up to the current patch? Got the LATEST Vista codec pack?

mansrm81 is right, you can't remove MP11. For some reason, I thought you could. Sorry.

From what you've described, if media Player is working, then it shouldn't need to be repaired. It's not broken. It's Oblivion that has the issue :)

As smarteyeball pointed out, the problem may well lie with a codec.

If you wish to view your installed codecs, do the following:
- Open Windows Media Player
- Press the ALT key to access the menus dropdown.
- Follow "Help"->"About Windows Media Player"
- Click on the "Technical Support Information" link in the About

This will give you the file names and versions of the codecs, but NOT their exact location on the filesystem or what media formats they can handle.

Note: If you do this from the 64bit version of WMP, it will show the 64bit codecs but not the 32bit. The opposite is true if you do it from the 32bit version of WMP.

Thanks smarteyeball the sfc/scannow did it.

I had the same problem, i was listening to a foreign radio station for a couple of years when all of a sudden it would not connect anymore, I tried other programs but could not find how to connect to radio stations.

I am using win 7 now but the same thing has hapened before with vista and i had to re-install.

Thanks a lot again,

Claude
