Ultimate x64 bit problems

At the moment I have no Office because I was advised when Word 2003 would crash on start and have to be restarted in safe mode to uninstall and reinstall it. Now I can't get it loaded at all. My very expensice IT guy spent 2 hours and gave up the HP people (this is a brand new laptop) said Vista isn't compatible with Office Pro 2000 which we upgraded from... I have 8 computers running 2003...

The other issue is that when I click on a message in hotmail it crashes. No message, just a freeze. What a hassle - I have no Outlook because of problem 1 and no hotmail because of problem 2.

Wish I'd been warned... I guess I really was - all those HP machines with extra cost to be 'downgraded' to XP.

Suggestions MOST appreciated!

were you able to use Office 2003? That's what I'm trying to load. Your warning does make me think that just shoveling out the $$ for 2007 is not the solution... what a hassle.

Although I cannot say about Outlook '07 as I do not use it, I am using Office 2007 (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and a couple of other things) in Vista Ultimate x64 SP1 without a hitch.

Well, HP thinks it's the way my IT company setup the permissions, the IT company thinks not... with 2 free hours a month and then $175/hr thereafter it gets tricky. Which makes it hard to know if the problem will be solved by upgrading to Office 2007.
