Norton Ghost 14 & Vista Home Premium 64bit

Hi to all,
I am wondering if anyone can help me to install the Norton Ghost 14 program to my computer?

As I bought the product today and when I put the disk in the drive and ran the installer, it all seemed to go well and I then rebooted the computer with the disk still in the drive.
On the reboot the computer hung up and stayed on a Black screen, I then did a Reset of my computer and when it rebooted I got a Blue screen with an error message - System_Service_Exception.
The computer rebooted and I removed the disk, and then I got another Blue screen about Bad_Pool_Header.
Finally I had to restart my computer with my Vista disk in place, so that I could un-install Norton Ghost 14. I managed to do this and I then did a System Restore to get my computer back to a decent state so I could use it.

I have had a search around on the Symantec website, and I cannot find anything to help me with this problem. And how I can install Norton Ghost 14 on my computer, and if I have to disable anything for the installation?

Thanks. Gary

Kudos! Thanks!

Sorry johkaz. But Norton software is really bad. You already opened the softare so getting a refund is now between you and symantec.

But really, in the future buying anything made by symantec is really a bad idea. Everything they make is pure trash(as you can already see).

Get good, working imagining software from Acronis. Google the name and you'll find it fast.

Alas...another unfortunate symantec victim.

Whatever you do, don't try to put that back on your system. Its norton, its crap!

Have you tried right clicking on the installer and clicking on 'run as administrator'? This usually works for me.

While I won't go that far in bashing Norton, I will say they do a poor job of supporting Vista64, and unfortunately the consumer doesn't find out till they get the item installed their 64bit OS. I had to switch from Norton Anti-Virus 2008 to Kaspersky Anti-Virus once I moved to Vista64 because Norton wasn't "fully functional" under the OS.

As for a 32bit OS systems, I've never had a problem, even under Vista, so its a matter of opinion.

I do agree on getting Acronis' True Image software. Good backup + imaging program, although i'm not really sure it "fully" supports Vista 64 either. Notice the supported OS'

I haven't seen where anyone has had problems running Acronis on 64 bit. Most (not all) programs that run on 32 bit will also run on 64 bit although they run as 32 bit.

As I stated earlier, Norton Anti-Virus ran with limited functionality under Vista 64, but I understand what you're saying.

Incidentally, I did contact Acronis via chat and was told that:

Vista 64bit is also supported by Acronis True Image Home 2009, don't worry about that

Looks like I’ll have to get the new version. For some odd reason version 10 had problems doing scheduled backups under 64.

I used ATI 11 with zero issues under Vista x64. I am now useing 2009.

Zero issues.

As for Norton. IMO and millions of others opinion they should just dhut down and get their crap off retail shelves ASAFP!

Hardly a day goes by I dont have to remove it from some poor souls system in order to get him working again.

Their day is done. Time for symantec to call it a life.

Hi,

Amazingly, Norton now do a little program that works great.
I have been using it for awhile on x64 with no problems, even though it's beta.

Norton Labs | UAC Tool

The Norton UAC tool allows an application to run with silently-elevated privileges only in a specific context, one previously approved by the user with the "don't ask again" check box selected. This means that there is a difference between regedit.exe launched from the start->run box, regedit.exe originating from a shortcut double-click, and regedit.exe launched from a double click on a .reg file (and the context actually changes with each .reg file), and regedit.exe launched by an application (malicious or not). Given the contextual awareness of Norton UAC tool's automatic responses, the Norton UAC tool provides a usability improvement over Vista's default UAC prompts, while maintaining obvious security improvements in the Vista kernel (such as isolation, file/registry virtualization, and user interface privilege isolation) that are all disabled when UAC is disabled.
If you want to try, it is available in 32 or 64 bit versions. If you do not wish to send info. back to Norton , uncheck the box that says something about Submissions during the installation.

Still can't bring myself to risk one of their security suites, though.

I have just installed Maxblast, which is an Acronis true Image product, being given out free by Seagate. Had no problems installing it on Vista x64, or in creating an image of my disk - haven't tried to restore it yet, but working perfectly so far.

MAXBLAST2008-11-28_063000.jpg

It's ostensibly to help you to add/change hard drives , but in fact is pretty identical to any disk image app.

Seagate Technology - MaxBlast 5

Just click English - in blue , halfway down the page on the left, accept the agreement , and download.

Hope it helps

Hi,

Many thanks for the replies, and to say i am angry with Symatec at the moment is an understatement.
As i went online with one of their 'Technicians', and he got the program installed ok.
But in the process my £1,000 3 day old computer is now useless....

As he must have changed some settings, and he has destroyed the Log on screen.
So now i cannot even log on in Normal or Safe Mode, and my Vista system is f*****d

Thanks again for the help.

Do you have disks? Most manufactures have a recovery partition on the hard drive that can be accessed via the boot options menu. See you owners manual for how to get there. If this is true, then you should be able to restore the computer to factory spec.

Also method 2 here might be of help. http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/76905-system-restore-how.html

Please keep us posted.

Hi,

Sir,

You are my saviour and i cannot thank you enough for the link that you supplied above.:D :)

As i did a repair of the system using Method Two, and my computer is again up and working.
Regarding the disk i used it is an OEM version, which i bought along with the parts for a gentleman to make the computer for me. So this is why i bought Norton Ghost 14, so that i could have a ghost backup of my drive as it is at the moment to fall back on.

And i just can't get over the fact that the Symantec product caused so much trouble, and then the Live Online 'Technician' actually then screwed up my Log on screen. As i ended up with a "The Group Policy Client Service Failed The Logon" error screen, in both Normal Logon and also in Safe Mode as well.

Anyway i would also like to say a big thank you, to everyone who has helped me with this.

Gary

joel406: I've heard it both ways about ATI 10, some say it works, others, (me included), say it has problems. I'm going to pick up the latest version and go from there.

As to Norton, I personally never had an issue with them till I moved to Vista 64. And the issue I had was NAV 2008’s inability to right click and scan individual folders. That option was missing as it was discovered that NAV 2008 wasn’t fully compatible with Vista 64.

Other then the compatibility issue just described, I’ve never had an issue with them and had been using Symantic products since 1998. They simply got the job done.

Now that I’m on Vista 64, I use Kaspersky Anti-Virus, but I probably never would have moved from Norton AV if I was still using a 32bit OS.

Like all software programs, you’re bound to have problems; Vista is a prime example - Love it or hate it.

Just my opinion

I disabled backup on purpose (use Nero backup when I need it) as for the firewall i have it to alert me when there's a program that needs access to the net, and if there's a site I'm kinda fishy about i don't even bother.
Yeah i guess I'm just lucky.
Sorry for the off topic guys.

Hi,

Before i send my copy of Norton Ghost 14 back for a refund, can i ask for some replies on this possible reason why i cannot get this program to work on my computer? Below is part of an e-mail i received from the gentleman that made the computer for me, when i mentioned about the problems i have been having with getting Norton Ghost 14 installed on my computer.

Ghost needs the Microsoft .Net Framework 2.x to be installed (I think I installed version 3.x) now this should get loaded automatically along with Ghost if its not already there. I’m wondering though if its either not installed .Net 2 or has not installed the 64bit version. May be worth checking to see if its listed under installed programs and if its not loading it manually before trying to reinstall Ghost again.

The MS link is here:http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=B44A0000-ACF8-4FA1-AFFB-40E78D788B00&displaylang=en

You may then also need to install the .Net 2.x SP1http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=029196ED-04EB-471E-8A99-3C61D19A4C5A&displaylang=en

Now i have tried to follow the instructions as above and the results are as below, in the reply that i sent to him about his e-mail.

From your links I have tried to install the Framework programs that you have mentioned, the results are as follows:

Image NetF2_basic is the download from the first link you sent, and it shows that this program is already installed on my computer.

Image NetF2 is the other download from the second link, and this one says that it is not supported by Windows Vista.

Now it has got me to thinking, as you have said that you have installed version 3.x. And I am now wondering if the Norton program needs the Net 2.0 SP1 version for it to work? And seeing as it is not supported on my operating system, this may cause the Norton Ghost 14 program to have the problems that I have been having? And that the Norton program cannot use the 3.x version yet?

Because Vista has stepped over the SP1 version to only work with the 3.x one?

Pictures of the images mentioned in my e-mail reply above.

Do you have all of the Vista's updates installed on you system, including SP1, and, ...the optional ones, like... .net???

Also, it's quite easy to call Symantec and find out if Norton Ghost 14 supports Vista 64. If it doesn't, then you're spinning your wheels trying to get the program that's not supported, installed. If it does, then they should be able to help install it.

Also, I just checked my computer, and Windows Update, for my "installed Updates" and I only have .net 1.1, .net 1.1 hotfix, and .net 3.5, there is no .net 2.0 installed on my system.

Also, my experience with this notice: "This product is not supported on Vista Operating System" means just that, it's not supported nor required.

Do yourself a favor and find out if the software is supported by calling Symantec and go from there.

Hi,

Before i send my copy of Norton Ghost 14 back for a refund

As has already been stated, if you can get the refund and give up on Norton.

Seagate Technology - MaxBlast 5

Just click English - in blue , halfway down the page on the left, accept the agreement , and download.

That or Seatools,

Seagate Technology - SeaTools

either one will do as long as there is a Seagate or Maxtor hard drive installed (doesn't even need to be a current drive). In any case give it a try. Only thing is that if you want to do more than a full backup (incremental) you will need the full version. You can still create the recovery disk for restoring the backup, you just can't make incremental backups (and a few other features are disabled).

Well i have given up on Norton Ghost 14, as i took your advice and phoned Symantec.
When i finally got to talk to someone about it, they said that it is not supported for Vista 64 bit, but i will put you through to a helpline about it. After being given the run around, on what must have been the worst phonelines to use. I finally get another 'Technician', who again asks to access my computer and then tries to install the program again, and nearly ruined the operating system again before i stopped him.

The end result is that the disk is on it's way to Symantec, so i can get a refund.
