| xp home | upgrading hi im currently running windows xp home and am thinking of upgrading to vista home premium for directx 10 but feel that my computer would be slowed down to much to really benifit from this. im running e4500 overclocked to 2.9 ghz, 2GB ddr2 RAM, 320gb hrad drive, 600W psu and 3870 HD graphics card would it be worth it? |

| Vista Home Premium 32-bit & Vista Ultimate 64-bit both Service Pack 2 W7 Pro RTM 7600 32 & 64 | Re: upgrading Hi jackt31, Your system should run Vista just fine. Make sure that you have the correct drivers though. These can be obtained from the hardware manufacturers' websites. I would be inclined to do a clean install of Vista rather than upgrade XP. Fortunately, you can still use the Upgrade version to do that - see: Clean Install From Upgrade Vista |

| xp home | Re: upgrading thanks for feedback, just a couple more questions. am i correct in saying that a clean install would wipe my hard drive whereas just a upgrade would keep all my data and simply replace the OS? also would i have to reinstall games such as crysis that i am currently running on windows xp in order to get directx 10 quality? |

| Vista Home Premium 32-bit & Vista Ultimate 64-bit both Service Pack 2 W7 Pro RTM 7600 32 & 64 | Re: upgrading You are correct. However, because of the architectural differences between XP and Vista you will be better off backing up your user data to a USB stick and then restore it from there using the appropriate programs. You will, of course, need to reinstall these on Vista, and you may need to check for updates to some of them to ensure that they are Vista compatible. As a general rule, all programs (including games) should be reinstalled on new OS installs to ensure that the correct data is written to the correct area in the registry. |
