| Vista 64 Bit | Need clarification I have always found this to be unclear when it comes to installing patches for games, virtually all the time the websites say "Exit all antivirus/firewall software before installing patches" Ok clear enough for some, but they had'nt bargained for me lol What I need clearing up is this: I have always when having read that simply right click the Avast (virus program) icon and chose exit etc....but is this enough? or do I have to go into services and disable it completely? inc the firewall? | Vista Home Premium 32-bit & Vista Ultimate 64-bit both Service Pack 2 W7 Pro RTM 7600 32 & 64 | Re: Need clarification Hi Chris, There should be no need whatsoever to disable your computer security whilst installing game patches - after all, you didn't need to disable it whilst installing the original game. This is especially important if the only way of updating the game is online. If, however, you can download and save the patch prior to installing it then yes, you can disable security (make sure that you physically disconnect your machine from the network/internet before you do so). You can then install the patch from the saved file. Remember to reenable security before going back online. However, I don't recommend disabling your security, even when installing a patch from a saved file. To put things in perspective, I don't need to disable the security on my system when I am updating system drivers, such as audio and graphic drivers, so I don't see why it should be necessary for some games (unless there is some ulterior motive). |

| Vista 64 Bit | Re: Need clarification Hi Dwarf, Many thanks for clearing it up for me, makes perfect sense ![]() I shall just carry on doing it the way I have been then, only exiting the virus scanner, till its done. Most patches I do save to the HD and then scan them to be on the safe side ![]() Much obliged to you Chris |
