Looking for a program for deleting empty folders.

I am looking for a program or a windows explorer addon that will search a folder I indicate, and delete all the empty sub-folders. I am cleaning up my music folder and found out that I have over a thousand empty folders in it due to old music I had deleted. I don't want to have to go through and delete each one manually. I don't have that kind of spare time. Please help.

Programmers, if you can write a plugin for this, please do!!!

Take a look around on this site:
DonationCoder.com Forum - Index

I believe I saw something with that feature but I don't recall which utility it's in.
If it doesn't exist try Coding Snacks forum there. If it's easy to do somebody may code it to order.

Found a good one! Empty Folder Nuker 1.2.0 free download. Empty Folder Nuker will find and delete all empty folders starting from a base folder of your choice.

Folder Nuker v 1.2.0

NOTE: This is my first time using that shareware site and, let it be said, that the program seems to work pretty well and returned no results from Norton/TIS Pro 2010/Malwarebyte's Anti-Malware 1.46 and also Spyboy S&D 1.6.2.

Forget about conflicts, I ran them one at a time. :) ...fun fun fun!

Seems safe! Enjoy!

Safer-Networking.org's Spybot Search & Destroy v1.62 has a specific plug-in, (to add,) called Secure File Shredder. I wanted to update this post to mention it.

You can customize your installization to make sure almost everything unwanted isn't included BUT that.

Simply drag the bar at the bottom of the utility to make the "number of passes" (attempts to delete difficult folders) up to 35, the maximum, then click "chop away!." You can click the "+" sign to add as much as you want.

Also, if you have a .txt or Notepad document open ahead of time, you can perhaps find it easier or save time by building your list so you don't have to click around through that + menu in Spybot S&D.

That isn't a perfect application, but the only one I've found to work more than any other.

My ultimate and personal favorite as a last resort is within an Anti-Spyware program, Malwarebyte's Anti-Malware (download.com, also Malwarebytes.org.) It's in the last tab within the program, called FileAssassin.

It's just like FileShredder, you navigate to desired folder or file. However, once you choose to delete it, it's a very secure process, not "within Windows," or explorer.exe-inclusive. They suggest (rightfully so,) nearly demanding a restart. When you delete it through FileAssassin, assuming it requires that type of a tool, it's important to do so on the spot.

Good luck and I hope this update helps.

Hey pac,

Did you download the file from the other site and then just upload the .exe file to make installation simpler or is this enhanced in some way?

You have an amazing collection - how do you manage to keep up with new versions of all these different programs?

I wonder how this differs from http://freewareapp.com/remove-empty-directories_download/? They seem very similar. I wonder which is best in this situation?

I know this wasn't directed to me, but I have an approach. I'm always online and don't see the point to downloading anything and clicking Run.

I save (everything) and catalogue it. I have Western Digital (1TB each) external hard drives. The file transfer rate is slow as all get out, BUT for that storage space, I got them each for around $80 new in box!

It's a simple tree structure. Make a Games folder (if you are into "unofficial app's," and want to save your setup files, or saved game files, or whatever,) and a Program Files folder just like your C: drive on your OS.

I think it's a cool idea (initially suggested to me, and I've learned A TON OF STUFF by doing it this way.)

Save your files and programs by manufacturer, then name, then version.

You'll find your breadth of software knowledge gets bigger and better all the time; you'll even start remembering what version of what works best with what. :-)

Anything SysInternals or Microsoft I always tag with MS (then file name.) If anything COULD or even possibly be detected as a false positive with antivirus(malware)(spyware) programs, I use WinRAR to stuff the target file in a compressed archive or a SFX (Self-Extracting Archive.)

That keeps most scanners out.

I hope this comes of benefit to someone, as the download "hoarders," as a friend put it, gotta stay organized.

As to how to stay informed and alert: Visit the big 3rd party vendor sites. 2 good reasons:

1.) FileHippo.com; been around forever, but if you download Adobe Acrobat Reader 8.1.3, for example (XP's favorite version,) it's a full offline installation, not some GetRight download manager. (GetPlus?) Those always end up with issues.

You'll still get your Bloatware check-off boxes, like toolbars, etc.

Also, on their main page they have a nice listing and grouping if you're like me who has to "try" everything once.

2.) Softpedia.com, FileHippo.com, MajorGeeks.com (AWESOME,) GeeksToGo.com (for anti-virus/anti-malware, but ADVANCED tools & effective! all free..., + awesome stuff like Dial-A-Fix.) Pro Site. Giveawayoftheday.com is one to subscribe to; you get a full licensed software product daily; some of it is solid gold crap. Some is AWESOME. I wound up with a 5-product Ashampoo bundle (includign the full Office Suite,) and at one point even got the SobolSoft (google them) Microsoft Office "helper" programs, like combine multiple docs into one, remove hyperlinks from all .PDF files, etc. Amazing. Or, even, extract all your hotmail emails to text and save them outside IE.

FileHippo is very reputable. One last thing: If you google and want to search within that site (or any,) you get better*** results than actually using the target website's in-house search engine. Why? I have no clue.

I've just done it this way for years and see, daily, how it works.

To file Adobe Acrobat Reader in Filehippo.com, you'd type this in google.com's search bar:

site:filehippo.com Adobe 8.1.3

That's it.

Or, if you MUST have a version (or particular thing with other similarly named products,) search by:

site:microsoft.com "Internet Explorer" "7"

That'll get you exactly what you want.

That's my 2 cents, (spent very long-winded-like; but hey, it's information.)

Hi V877051,

Nice post with a lot of good sites and recommendations. I've added any I didn't already have to my favorites. I too have saved (almost) everything I've ever downloaded - I don't use Run either; however, there is a problem with that. Some of the older versions of software will not install on newer operating systems (some not even in compatibility mode) and, as such, once I no longer possess systems with those OSs (and/or deem it unlikely any of my clients will have those OSs either), I can see no good point in saving the program. Even if I have the space, the program is essentially no longer of any value. I might even accidentally use it by mistake and cause a problem due to the incompatibility.

Plus, some of the older versions will not read newer versions of the programs and don't have conversion programs available because they are so old (like trying to read .docx files on a Word verion that predates Word XP). Then again, it also works the other way if for example you have very old Access databases which cannot be read by or coverted into anything that can be read by more recent Access programs - there having the old Access program can prove to be invaluable (and I've installed both on the same system at the same time and it works - though that isn't true of every program).

Another issue again concerns compatibility - but is much more recent that what I just described. For example, fairly recent (but mostly corrected with the newest) versions of many Nero, Sonic, and Roxio products can cause all sorts of problems with Vista even if you just leave them installed when upgrading let alone trying to install them fresh. So how do you remember which ones are OK to use with which Operating Systems? Seems like a "Compatibility" category is required in the software storage database to deal with that (and I wish I had thought of that when I started and not now that I have too many to do that). It also works the other way too as there are products that work on Windows 7 (and Server 2008) but on nothing earlier.

Another consideration is compatibility with other software products (not just the operating system). Some products have various add-ons and supplemental programs and/or interface with other existing programs and one must consider those implications as well. For example Windows Live Essentials 2011 doesn't really "play well" with prior versions of included or similar products. And you don't have to go back too many years before the problem manifests. Consider the interface between Windows Live Mail and Windows Live Messenger (or worse, the versions prior to the "live" versions). There have been reported problems between WLMail 2011 and WLMessenger 2009. In fact, Microsoft specifically recommends that you don't mix and match the Essentials program versions because of such problems. So you downloaded and saved all the WLMail programs from the beginning (including those now incorporated in Essentials and difficult to find with separate stand-alone installers for the individual programs). How do you code this in the database so you don't create a horrific mess by combining versions when you shouldn't?

Then there's the issue of installing different versions of the same product at the same time. Some will not allow it and will overwrite/upgrade the older version or refuse to install the older version if a newer one exists. Some programs on the other hand allow multiple versions at the same time (e.g., Access as I mentioned above). Is this yet another category to code or are we supposed to remember all of this?

And then there's anti-malware, anti-virus and similar products. Many of the older versions are no longer supported so you can't get current definitions which makes you vulnerable. Most of the good ones out there support OSs at least to XP. Does it make sense to save the older versions when they are outdated, ineffective, unsupported, and provide inadequate protection? This is one category where I only keep the most current version (well, usually the last two in case the newest one has problems but I want to use the product and typically one version back is still fully supported).

I wish there were some way to automatically compare my programs and versions to some "complete listing of all software and versions" to see which ones had updates without needing to check them all individually from time-to-time - but I've yet to find a convenient way to do that. If someone knows of a way to do that, I'd love to hear it as it would save me a great deal of time keeping current as I have many programs installed simply because questions about them come up and I find it convenient to be able to open the program to see the problem for myself or explain a procedure step-by-step by doing it myself as I compose the reply.

I could go on, but I just wanted to comment on the idea of saving everything ever downloaded, the risks involved, the fact that sometimes it's unwise to use an older version for any reason, the compatibility issues with operating systems and other software, and various other factors which were probably not included in the database when started (and probably still doesn't exist though some may now be added). To be sure, there are some advantages in some or even many cases and it can prove to be valuable, but one must weigh that against the risks unless one fully understands everything that is downloaded and when and when not to install something - especially something from the distant past.

And take note, some people (like me) take pleasure in long, detailed posts that provide as much information as I can think of when drafting them. LOL!
