Real player just popping up randomly

Hi,

I have no idea why Real Player is popping up randomly. Not when I boot up from a shutdown or restart, just doing usual business on my laptop. I imagine you want me to take note when this happens, but it is really strange behavior. I thought my default player was Windows Media Player, but I could have changed that because I was having problems gettng my iPod to sync, bla bla bla.

Do you know what could cause this strange behavior?
Thanks!
Linda

Try just installing another player. That should reset all the file type associations for media files. Then when you run wmp it will probably ask you if you want to change them back. Click that you do. May work, may not but usually with stuff like that you have to switch apps, then switch back, like when you change default browser. Never works exactly how you expect. You have to switch away from what you want first, so you can switch back. :)

Miles,
I appreciate your quick reply, but I'm still confused :( You know how sometimes words get misconstrued when typing. I try my best, but I'm still not very good at it. I will try to clarify.

I want Real Player to be my default player (because that is where all my playlists are for my iPod), but I don't know why it launches on its own without me asking it to. It just launches without any rhyme or reason. Any ideas on this? Thanks again.

I understand. Usually when a program comes up for no reason it's because it's associated with a file type that it shouldn't be. I would try my suggestion because even if it doesn't work, it shouldn't hurt anything. If it doesn't work then I'd try a forum that's more specific to Real Player. If it's happening to you then it's probably happening to other RP users, so an RP forum would concentrate those questions and solutions or work-arounds. May be a bug specifig to RP. I use VLC so RP I don't know much about.

The other thing that works sometimes is uninstall the program, and install it again.
I should have thought of that earlier. :)

I dont know Real Player either but you can be sure default settings are made so Real Player gets highlighted, in your face. Check this Stop Real Player Downloader Pop Up • mozillaZine Forums and after that go through all settings in Real Player. Itunes/Quicktime, WMP, Real Players, others will all fight for your attention.

Be sure you have latest version btw. Hopefully needed changes are possible to make in normal preferences window and no "hacking" is required, like turning off services and such.
