Problems restoring files from backup made on another computer

My Vista business laptop died recently and I'm trying to restore the files from a windows backup I made before it died. I'm restoring these files onto a replacement laptop running windows vista ultimate. Unfortunately I'm getting the following error message: "The files you are restoring have security permissions for a user account which could not be found on this computer. Please use the control panel to create a user account with the same name. The security permissions on these files will be reassigned to that user account"

I have tried to rename the user account but without success "The user account [name] was not found for the following reasons "No mapping between account names and security IDs was done (0x80070534). Please ensure you create a user account with the same name."

I've tried forums and microsoft help pages without success. If anyone can help I'd be so grateful!!

You have to create a "NEW" User with the same name, not rename an exisiting account. Security permissions will then be re-assigned to the new account with the same name as the one you are trying to restore.

Hi - I am having a similar problem but Backup/Restore tells me to create a user account with the name:
Kevin-PC\SQLServer2005MSSQLUsers$KEVIN-PC$SQLEXPRESS

Is this possible? The limit on creating an account seems to be 20 chars - and I can't use the \ symbol.

Any help gratefully received, thanks. Kevin
