Powerdvd Ultra no audio/playback freeze on startup

Anyone else notice this in regards to BD movies?

On saturday I "upgraded" my working 2217 build to build 2705/2815 then there is no audio, and the video freezes at movie startup.
I then reinstalled/restored build 2217, and still had a different issue: a message to update, or there would be no Blu-ray playback. The "update" opens up a IE window to download Build 2705. Of course the issue here was If I updated, then I had no audio and the video froze/crashed the player.

I figured out how to fix the issue, but I dont know what caused it. Its as if the Player will longer connect and update/authenticate the playback keys, Unless using a newer build, and those newer builds are non-functional/glitchy. I fixed the issue, and now Build 2217 plays all again, but had I not backed up the Cyberlink/Powerdvd folders I would be stuck with a non-functional player.

I suspect the older build upgrade/or no playback message is by design. They want to force updates on those using player builds that can read BD files off the drive, and that use AnyDVD to break the encryption.

I tried two Movies; BD Spiderwick and BD Hellboy II. Anybody else try to update their build and have a "no play/no sound issue with newer BD movies?

Anyone using PowerDVD Ultra for BD playback, try installing the newer builds and then try to play a June 2008 or newer release BD movie.
(just to be safe though, back up the Cyberlink folder, and Powerdvd programs folder for restoration if need be)

I'm having the same issue PowerDVD 7.3. However I have no idea where to locate the build number. It doesn't me anything other than 7.3 in the about of the program.

This problem starting happening for me with Vista SP2. Do you think it's just not compatible?

I'm having this problem with two different blu-ray discs.

Go into the C: drive (and Programs x86) and right click "powerdvd 7", or "Cyberlink" (whatever PDVD7U calls itself) folder , select Properties, use shadow copy to restore previous version (to when it worked). If you tried to reinstall the app, you overwrote the app updates.
All the automatic incremental player updates are in this folder.

For some reason Cyberlink does not do the incremental playback updates when a BD is inserted (I think they are trying to force updates to the newest build- which is glitchy)

All my BD's play fine now after restoring the 'PowerDVD8Ultra' folder.

to locate build, start PDVD, right click screen select "about"

I have the OEM version of PowerDVD and there's no Build number. Just 7.3.
It worked just fine before Vista Sp2.

I have powerdvd 7 ultra 4616a ( i have powerdvd 7 Ultra and 8 ultra versions)
I saved these because they enabled BD playback, and fixes (these actually fixed many issues regarding BD-Java , and the AACS keys-previously Cyberlink's keys were revoked and newer [2008] Fox, Sony releases, would not play at all (black screen, freeze and lockup of player. Build 4616 fixed this)

You need to update to 4616
You will not find these on Cyberlink anymore, and the newer builds are glitchy. These files are too big to upload here though.

[edit]
This is retail/download only will not work for OEM versions.
OEM were the worst. Slow for updates. Many who had the OEM would just outright buy the retail versions as the OEM version were useless for BD playback, and had many features disabled.

Yeah, neither of those downloads/updates work. It still does the same thing with either update. It's kind of sad to think the OEM copy won't work anymore.
I really don't feel like I need to lay down $99 just for the software to play blu-rays.

has it ever work for you? did you try to restore shadow copies of the folders in both locations?

Yes it did work before Vista SP2. (I'm still not sure if this is the cause or not)
However when I go to restore the shadow copies there are none available. Maybe it removed it with SP2?

No.
SP2 would have created another restore point though. Did you delete your system restore points, or do you have it disabled? SP2 didnt affect my Powerdvd at all.

It looks like it was disabled when I did a ghost clone of my hard drive. But that has nothing to do with PowerDVD as I installed the bluray drive after the clone.

Thet may be your problem then, If you just performed a fresh install. That would explain the lack of shadow copies. looks like you will need to contact Cyberlink, or your OEM.

Yes a fresh install of PowerDVD not the OS. I cloned the drive with Archonis so I didn't need to reload my computer when I upgraded my hard drive. Seriously that was done a while ago.

Last week I was watching Blu-rays on my LG drive with PowerDVD 7.3 and ever since SP2 it broke. I contacted PowerDVD about the issue.

Thanks for your help anyways! :)

Rive,

How did you 'fix' the problem of having to upgrade in order to play (presumably newer) BR discs?

I restored the original Powerdvd8ultra 2217 folder back to a point before it was changed by the newer/broken "build update". In Vista ultimate you can use shadow copy to restore previous versions.

I actually restored pc from a backup image, and then restored the updated 2217 folder to a last modified date of May, 2009 from file backups. Orginally, the restore was from Feb 2009, right after build 2217 was installed, but before the downloaded automatic AACS updates. I had difficulty with BD playback (due to I think, of the missing AACS BD updates), after restoring the May version of the folder all was back to normal.

I dont know what the problem is with the newer builds, but they are glitchy, and appear to break the BD playback with the AACS keys. I can only assume that when I played newer BD movies (the player would then check for "updates" and then perform a "download"), and updated the AACS, now for whatever reason this is broken, and the players no longer do this, and instead will require the New build to be updated. By restoring the app folder, I must have also restored any incremental AACS updates that occured previously when I played the newer releases (like Hellboy II, and Spiderwick) which enabled BD playback on the newer releases due to the updated AACS. This of course may present an issue if the AACS keys are again changed on the new releases, and Powerdvd ultra is "broken", and will not check for futher updates. But for now it works for me.

Something else I did too that may have affected BD playback. I installed the BD playback 2021U build fix Before I installed 2217U Perhaps ths somehow enabled the AACS updates, I dont know, but I did notice this build fixed the issues with freeze ups/black screeens, and AACS keys general updates. I then updated to 2217.

New update for PowerDVD 8 Ultra to 2021:
Newest updates:
Improvement in Blu-ray Disc playback performance on AMD platforms.
General updates for Blu-ray Disc titles' compatibility.
