Videos get set as dreamscene backgrounds instead of being played

Say I double click on a video clip, instead of opening windows media player 11 and playing it, vista ultimate sets it as the desktop background.

I've even noticed it treats MP3's differently suddenly - when you try to open them, it displays the "Open With" box where you can select a program. Even after a selection, it doesn't stick and happens every time.

The files have the WMP logo on them and everything I've checked has it as the default media player. The files WILL play if you right-click and "Open With".

It just started doing this a few hours ago, media player got put on the back burner somehow. Any ideas?

It's Vista Ultimate 32-bit, SP1.

Thanks

Hi hairyknuckle, welcome to the forums.

You may need to reset you default programs, click Start -> Default Programs then click 'Set your Default Programs. Click Media Player and if it doesn't say 'This program has all it's defaults' then try clicking 'Set this program as default' and see what happens when you double-click a MP3 or video file.

Hope this helps :)

Example: Video file selected, it wants to set it as the background.

Regular ol' MP3 - it doesn't know what to do with it, even though it knows to use WMP.

I'm trying to think of anything I might have done recently. I plugged in a projector for a friend and the screen resolution fluctuated a few times trying to adjust just like anything else, but that couldn't have been it.
