New here! Need some help!

Hey all! Glad to find this forum. The switch to Vista has been tough for me. Lost my computer when I was doing an online college test and a storm came up. Our well pump got hit and fried my XP. I MISS my XP! It's been a real hassle trying to get things to work with Vista.

Which leads me to my current dilemma...

I don't know if my computer caught a bug - Kaspersky and TrendMicro Housecall don't find anything - or what, but for some reason, I lost the Windows Installer. Finally got that back, but I then "lost" my Office 2000 Pro program. All the icons for all those files were the "generic" icons. I uninstalled Office, then reinstalled it. It seemed like things were working until I went to open my Goodsol Solitaire program. The Office installer opened and said the program was not installed and did I want to install it now? It then automatically went into the install mode. But, it would do that, then start all over.

So, I uninstalled it, then reinstalled it again. Same thing. Also, now when I want to open a Word doc, it does the same thing.

When I did the install, I told the program to install all to run from my computer.

Help! This is getting quite annoying! I also went to open my Picture Viewer this morning and the same thing came up - Office is not installed...

What can I do????

Hi TanBrae,
Refer the first link where it says " Because Office 2000 and Office XP are in Extended Support, there have been no fixes for issues that occur when these products are run on Windows Vista."
Description of the versions of Office that are supported on Windows Vista

I have read that 2000 can be installed on Vista but you may face a lot of problems , unexpected shutdowns and loss of work.

Check out the the link below.
You will note that quite a few of the posts have links for further reading. Have a look through those too.

Thanks, but,

that still doesn't solve my problem. I did go to MS's site, but didn't really get any answers as to how to solve this issue. I can't afford to buy another program because my old one won't work with Vista! I need to have Office for school. Guess I'll have to break down and use some of my student loan money to buy another program.

Download and install revo uninstaller, and remove your office 2000 from your computer with that software.
Restart your computer and install it again.

Post back the results :)

Quote from an archived post concerning Vista 64 and Office 2000

Office 2000 installed properly for me on Vista 64, and I removed the Outlook Express from the install using custom installation. I will use Windows mail, which is very "Express" looking. Everything works it seems.

However, when I went to get the 2000 upates as explained below (starting with Service Release 1a) and saved them to a folder and tried to run, I got an error. Anyone have any ideas? Does Office 2000 really need these updates?

It should work. However, none of the Automatic updating facilities such
as Microsoft Update or Office Update will process a Office 2000 setup.
You'll need to manually download and apply ( in order ), SR1a, SP2 &
SP3 then the individual updates. The manual downloads are found here:
http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/downloads/CD010225771033.aspx
*The Service Packs are found on pages 2 & 3 of the above link. Start
on page 3 to get Service Release 1a which should be installed first.

Office 2000 has a few compatibility issues with Vista and is not supported, if it's working fine for you then I would just leave it alone and forget the updates.

Thanks Admin. I was actually thinking that myself. I saw other forums where people were stressing over the updates.

The one common prob I saw, in getting Office 2000 to run in Vista 64, was including Outlook Express which may carry compatibility issues into the install. I red Xed it after choosing Custom Install, and the whole shebang installed without a glitch. Windows Mail is free, and if people liked Outlook Express, it's near identical.

I left Office 2007 on the PC, but noticed that after installing Off 2000 it killed the trial. :)

If I come into some spare money, I'll buy 2007 (but I still prefer Windows Mail over full ver. Outlook). Guess I am just use to Express.
