Java update?

Hello,
This popped up on my computer this morning:
capture.jpg

I was wondering if anyone has come across this and if it's legit.
I haven't heard anything through any of my normal forums but then I am not very good with computers..

Re: Java update?

Hi Ken,
I may have to . After I read your reply, I clicked on the icon, it then said it was 'no longer available' and disappeared.

I tried through the Java console in control panel as well and that said I had no updates pending.

Guess I'll head over to the Java website..
Thanks for your reply.

Yeah, for some reason, Java update notifications don't stay on your system for very long if you don't download them immediately. But, if you miss your opportunity at that time, they do reappear eventually -- but as zigzag3143 said, you can easily download them from the Java website. The only problem there, is that the number of Java's website downloads at any given time, can be extensive and very confusing. So make sure you identify the right download, which in your case is Java 6, Update 16.

Re: Java update?

Java 6 Update 16 has been out for a long time already, not sure of the date, but at least a couple of months already.. which means you've been using an older version, which isn't completely safe.
Considering it's good practice to keep up to date with things such as Java and Adobe Flash for security reasons. Being that older versions have vulnerabilities in them that can compromise your system.

No need to wait Peppurr, 'cos as Airbot has said, there are pitfalls in operating your system with outdated Java.

Check out the download centre here for Java Version 6 Update 16 [out since mid-July '09];

Java Downloads for All Operating Systems - Sun Microsystems

Another thing to do after your successful update download and restart, is to go to Control Panel / Programs and Features and remove / uninstall any earlier Versions or Updates of Java that may still be in your system.

It does sometimes happen that earlier outdated versions / updates of Java are not fully removed [extracted] during the installation of the later version, and it's best to check after each update, and uninstall as necessary.

If you have CCleaner installed, then it's even easier to do the removal through that.

Re: Java update?

Thanks guys, for the excellent advice, which prompted me to check which versions were running on my system (I have both 32 bit and 64 bit, so I have two Java apps running simultaneously) -- and sure enough, I wasn't up to date either.

So here's some general update info for all you folks who might not be up to date either:

To find out if Java is working on your system visit: Test your Java Virtual Machine (JVM), and then, go to the Java website for the most recent Java downloads.

JAVA FOR WINDOWS:
32 bit: Windows 7/XP/Vista/2000/2003/2008 Offline (32-bit) – (filesize: 15.89 MB)
64 bit: Windows 7/XP/Vista/2003/2008 (64-bit) – (filesize: 16.76 MB)

If you use 32-bit and 64-bit browsers interchangeably, you will need to install both 32-bit and 64-bit Java in order to have the Java plug-in for both browsers.

After installing Java, restart your browser andverify Java has been installed correctly. You can verify that it has been installed correctly by clicking Verify Now.

JAVA FOR OTHER OPERATING SYSTEMS: see all Java downloads here.

Re: Java update?

Hi guys..
I found this link posted on another forum and went over to the Sun website to read the release notes for this update..

Check this out:
Java SE 6 Update 16 Release Notes.

Quote:
Bug Fixes

This feature release does not contain any new fixes for security vulnerabilities to its previous release, Java SE 6 Update 15. Users who have Java SE 6 Update 15 have the latest security fixes and do not need to upgrade to this release to be current on security fixes.
Funny that it should pop up on my machine then disappear like that though..

Interesting, although even if Update 16 doesn't have any new security fixes, it must have something new, otherwise it would be Update 15 and not 16.
